I read an article today bemoaning the fact that college basketball fans are being forced to pay for streaming services in order to watch their favorite teams games. The premise of the article was that the NCAA would stream all games live and free. I'm not sure it would even be possible and even if it was could programs absorb the loss of any revenue they currently receive from media rights.

I can’t see the Big. Ten or SEC giving their rights to the NCAA

Other than rabbit-eared antiquarians, for many decades we've all had to pay, one way or another, to watch video of all sports—whether broadcast via cable or dish, or streamed via for-profit services. Why would or should that change for college basketball?

In addition, the NCAA doesn't own the broadcast or streaming rights for regular season games. The individual schools or, more likely, the conferences own these rights. The NCAA does own the rights to the NCAA tournament championship games it sponsors, but it licenses out those rights for mucho moolah to the big for-profit broadcasting and streaming companies.
