OT: NCAA - Five years to play four, right?

So, this was in the Providence game thread, and instead of gumming it up, thought I'd post and ask here. Perhaps Maggie is thinking that Ayanna would petition the NCAA for a 6th season, as she's missed two of her four years at UConn as of now?

The NCAA sometimes (often?) gives extra years. Ali Patberg got seven including the covid year. Hanna Cavinder got six including covid. That did not include any injuries or sitting due to transfer, she just decided to stop playing and then unstop.

Was about to mention this. It's called an eligibility extension waiver. Provided there's documentation to back up Patterson's case, which I'm sure exists, I believe she has a good case,.

Regardless of whether it's 1 or 2 years, Ayanna might have the right idea to get a master's degree.

But what she doesn't say is that the five-year calendar cap will cut off Ayanna's ability to use one of those sports eligibility years unless she is granted a waiver and given a sixth calendar year. Under NCAA Bylaw 12.6.1.7.1, a waiver of the five-year rule can be granted for "circumstances beyond the control" of the student, including (among less relevant others) "incapacitating physical or mental circumstances" and "circumstances of extraordinary or extreme hardship." No one but the NCAA knows how often they grant such waivers, but very few have been publicized.

From basketball, academic and career perspectives, I don't see any downside for Ayanna to stay at UConn next year.

Even back in the good ole days before NIL and the portal, an athlete could get 6th and even 7th years with a medical redshirt and an accepted appeal to ncaa.

Of course the key element was still only being able to compete in 4 official seasons.

I get what you are saying here, however the "2 years eligibility remaining" part is a bit murky. The casual fan may assume that means Ayanna will have 2 years left, opposed having 1 year left, and the potential of another. I agree that to my eyes, Ayanna staying for another year will have benefits, and after hearing Azzi gush over her as a teammate, and Ayanna wanting to be here, that is just as valuable as a player getting 20+ mins per game. These are the types of players that all teams need - the ones that come and work hard, and know that nothing is given, and most will be hard to earn.
