Bazz still @ #2. Putting NPOY aside, with the stretch coming up with marquee games against Cincy 2x, Memph, Louisville, and probably SMU, Bazz can finish strong and lock up a 1st team AA selection nod, which would cement him in the Husky Ring of Honor. When you see the way Marcus Smart has fallen out of favor with the media, and some finally waking up and realizing Aaron Craft just isn't that good, 1st team AA is easily doable.

2. Shabazz Napier, UConn: I’m not sure there is a player in the country that is more influential in regards to his team’s success than Napier. He’s averaging 17.9 points, 6.0 boards, 5.7 assists and 1.9 steals while shooting 43.5% from a team that doesn’t have a single low-post scoring presence and has a talented-but-inconsistent supporting cast. UConn is 17-4 this season with a win over Florida and a win at Memphis. Outside of a disastrous New Years trip to Texas — the first the Huskies took to that part of the country as a member of the American — Kevin Ollie’s team has been better than most anticipated.

Who is his main competitor at this point? Kyle Anderson is putting up some pretty absurd stats at UCLA, but he doesn't seem to be getting the recognition.

Many people feel McDermott has all but run away with it. But I'm not betting against Bazz. Cousy winner at a minimum.

Bilas talked about Shabazz in his top 68 teams post today. Some awesome numbers:

UConn has Cincinnati, Louisville and Memphis left on the schedule, and those games will determine selection and seeding. This is an NCAA tournament team, and its point guard, Shabazz Napier, is the only Division I player averaging at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game in conference play. He has scored or assisted on 46 percent of Connecticut's points during conference play. He is one of four players who average at least 17 points, five rebounds and five assists per game through the entire season.

These seasons can fly by so fast, you've really got to appreciate when one of our players is having a special season. This is one of those seasons.

Big game vs Cincy.

I meant for the all-American spot. I know they don't designate spots on the team by position, but you have to think at least one point guard makes the team. A lot of lists still have Marcus Smart ahead of Bazz, which I don't get. The kid still can't shoot.

Yea, the running joke on twitter is that Bazz has been at UConn for 8 years, but it does seem like yesterday that Bazz was wearing the baggy t shirt and running alongside Kemba.

The media got gassed off the Memphis game, and immediately declared that now he has a jumpshot, when its pretty obvious now that that game was an anomaly. Plus dude takes a ridiculous number of 3s a game too and can't hit a lick.

The Bilastrator has SMU ranked ahead of us and Memphis, but doesn't mention them in the key matchups at the top of his analysis. The Bilistrator is slipping.

Haha, speaking of the baggy t-shirt, I remember in one of the tournament games, Bazz started the game with just the jersey on. After first TV timeout, he had a long sleeve shirt underneath the jersey. After the 2nd TV timeout, he was back in the baggy t-shirt.

That's what happens when you are an obvious impact player over four years. Giffey and Olander are still around, but TO never really made an impact, and Giffey--until this year--did things that didn't really appear in the stats.

I was at that game with my Dad and couldnt help but laugh. It was either against Bucknell or Cinci, but I believe it was Cinci..

If he finishes on the north side of 18 pts 6 boards and 6 assists to go with 2 steals and the high shooting percentages he'll be hard to ignore. McDermott just has obscene scoring numbers but it's hard to say he's a "better" player than Bazz.

Hahahahah I believe he started with a huge long sleeve. Went to just jersey. Came back from halftime with his customary (at the time) baggy T. I was so curious wtf was going on.

Did anybody watch that ok state game yesterday . That team is full of crazy people , lead by lebryan Nash (who got all the touches over the last stretch , instead of an apparent top 5 pick) .

Piggybacking on that, college basketball writers have been talking about our 'lack of post presence', Where are all these mythological power forwards that are 6'10 240 and skilled? Iowa state is a terrific team with two 6'8 guys on the front line

I remember Napier hitting those free throws vs Kentucky and getting the steal vs louisville in the big east championship, also that ridiculously hilariousssllly missed layup in the national championship game that flew to some other dimension. He's special, and its been fun watching him mature.
