I understand he should do it and it's not too much to ask, but he so clearly doesn't want to do it that it looks and sounds horrible.

It's one of the stadium PR's few attempts to actually keep fans engaged in what's going on in the game. They should keep doing it, and it's up to PP to get his act together and comply.
