Since I joined the BY, I have been a complete supporter of our coach. As the random and often panicked speculations of the membership float across the web, I have been emboldened to state mine.
1. KO wants $3 M, which UConn will pay.
2. KO wants UConn and the AAC ten toes in. This means that Herbst and Manuel agree to go on the record saying that UConn will:
a. Do whatever any other conferences do to support athletes receiving scholarships from their universities, including stipends and whatever else may develop.
b. Move the AAC to commit as a conference to provide those benefits or, at least, permit individual schools to make their own decisions.
3. If UConn reneges on the promises to support the program in anyway, then Ollie can elect to be released from his contract at any time without any buyout expense.
4. The NBA is not a factor, except that it provides the leverage of an alternative if KO is not persuaded that the administration has his back and will not allow our teams to lose their competitive standing.
KO sees the big picture and knows that winning can become more difficult if UConn doesn't keep up. He was audacious enough to believe that he was going to win a NC and that is audacious enough to try to protect himself, his athletes and recruits. This why there is no deal, yet. Herbst is scrambling to have, at least, unofficial support for the promise Ollie wants from the regents and to poll other schools in the AAC.
