So glad to see it's competitive. Too often, loyalty is penalized (in the real world folks get a cost-of-living raise and become "detached" from the marketplace). One shouldn't have to "shop themselves" to leverage an increase (But - typically - they HAVE too)

>>>>earned $731,626 from the university and another $232,500 from Notre Dame Sports Properties in 2011.

Wow that's a long time contract. Don't know if I would give one that long. If I'm really good, I don't know if I'd sign one either.

I guess people are always re-negotiating anyway.

Didn't ND sign Charlie Weis to a 10 year contract based on one year as head football coach? At least Muffet has a long, successful career to use as a bargaining chip in her contract negotiations.

She does. Still, you would think institutions would learn.

What's wrong with a person saying, "This is my home - I like it here?" Muffet doesn't have anything to prove and you know she's not "looking for the next better job"(any more than Geno). You know she isn't going to get complacent.
FWIW: This says something to recruits. This program has a legacy.

In comparison, Maryland head coach Brenda Frese, who won a national title in 2006, earned $957,522.63 from the university alone in 2011.

WOW!!!

There is a reason that the MD Athletic Department is in major debt.

I always thought, for example, Geno, gets X dollars from the university (called Salary) and gets a set amount for speaking, TV, and other "related" activities (essentially PR type stuff) through the university which they may or may not get for making his services available. I could be completely wrong.
That's why I was not surprised to see Muffet's pay came in 2 pieces.

It is good that you mentioned Charlie Weis. Charlie Weis' Notre Dame team goes 9-3 in his inaugural coaching season and is rewarded with a 10 year contract. Weis' predecessor, Tyrone Willingham, is 10-2 his first season only to get fired two seasons later. Go figure!

You are correct. The state pays Geno's base salary of about $400,000 and the Athletic Department pays for an additional $1.2 million in "speaking and media appearances" fees. As an aside - several years ago, the AD money had come from donations and profits, not from taxpayers, but perhaps that's changed? Don't know.

Nothing, but in a 3-4 years, her contract may not look so good (as compared to...whoever/whatever). AD's change. Programs change. What if she wins 3 NC's in that time frame?

Buttttttt, like I said people re-negotiate all the time anyway.....i.e. they don't honor their contract.

Nor does it mean the contract doesn't have bail out clauses for both Muffet or the ND. Most do, the contract just predefines it.

I would hope so with that long a one.

Hey, I'm an executive recruiter. I wouldn't have a business if people didn't move around.

However, loyalty is a two-way street.

All companies say, "People are our most important asset" - Some actually MEAN it (and it is very difficult to "motivate" people OUT of those kinds of companies).

Going back to Nan and the "split" contracts - that is completely common. Vivian's is split, the former RU football coach's was split - and it is also correct that the University often does not pay [out of their own funds] the non-base salary part. Amongst others who cover it at Rutgers is Nike.

Weis had a regular season record of 9-2. In those two loses the point difference was a total of 6 points. The loses were to UofM in OT and USC (the Bush and Leinart led USC). That was with the same players Willingham went 6-6 with the previous season. There was plenty of optimism to go around following Willingham's reign as HC. Willingham is directly responsible for the contract offer to Weis with a couple other key factors: Weiss succeeded with a team that Willingham couldn't making him look like the "savior" of ND football, Weiss was coming from the Patriots in the midst of great success, and Weiss looked and played the part well enough to start getting offers from around the country and basically forced ND into that contract because others apparently wanted him. There was this fear that ND finally had a coach that could at least get them back to where Holtz had them and they were going to lose him to another school immediately. ND had a difficult time getting a coach they thought was on the level the needed. They went all out for Urban Meyer and failed. There were a couple of other attempts until they finally got Weiss. That type of contract will never happen again.

The contract with MM is a mirror of the contract just given to the men's coach Brey. It's the university affirming that they both will hold the jobs till they retire.

True, but at least in this instance (i.e. coaching positions), an institution usually has to pay off the coach if it fires the coach anyway.
