it was the right call for both sides. No one wanted to see him relieved of duties yet the program needed a new direction. A national championship and several ncaa tournaments but agree with Dans comments above. He has been a generous donor of the program as well but look forward to new direction for what was the jewel of our athletic program at one time.

Very excited to see what AD DB does with this hire. The Ray Reid coaching tree is pretty impressive, some names to point out:
  • Dane Brenner -- Wake Forest AHC. Has been at Wake for 12 years since 2011 after being at UConn as an assist for 4 years. His teams at Wake (and UConn) have never missed an NCAA Tournament; Wake has been one of the top programs since he joined, including NCAA semis in 2019 and runner-ups in 2016. Wake also has had 2 MAC Herman Trophy winners and 8 MLS draft picks in his tenure. He would be my top choice even though he hasn't been a HC before. Wake's current HC, Bobby Muus, played for Reid at SCSU and was an assistant at UConn, but there is no way he is leaving Wake if I had to guess.
  • Chris Gbandi -- Northeastern HC. Played at UConn 1998-2001, #1 overall pick 2002 MLS Draft. Been Northeastern coach since 2016 and is fresh off his best (and really only good) season this past year, going 11-6-2 (5-2-1) before losing in the first round of the CAA tournament.
  • George Kiefer, NC State HC. Played for Reid at SCSU, was HC at USF from 2002-2016 and has been at NC State since 2017. Hasn't had the best results at NC State (although 3 NCAAT's his first 3 years) so I'd consider him more of a long shot.
  • Tim O'Donohue, Navy HC. Was Reid's AHC from 2011-2015. Navy went 12-6-1 this past season and has had a winning record each of the past 3 seasons. Probably my #2 candidate in terms of being realistic.
  • Mike Petke, former Real Salt Lake and NY Red Bulls HC. Super long shot -- played for Reid at SCSU. Hasn't coached since August 2019. Would be a "big name" but unsure if this is what he wants to do.

Eh. That list of Reid’s coaching tree is not that impressive outside of Brenner. It would be a huge disappointment if the search was narrowed to just Reid connections. That has not always worked out for UConn. I mean having UConn connections as a prerequisite would have excluded Calhoun and Auriemma so I am immediately against limiting options.

Oh I didn’t disagree one bit. Not even saying it’s a prerequisite for the job. For example the UNH coach should absolutely receive a call from Benedict. Gun to my head I want Brenner. Wouldn’t be upset per say with the others on the list — while qualified that doesn’t mean they’re the best candidates. But it is an interesting coaching tree, more impressive than I thought it would be.

Hmmm so Bobby Muuss is a UConn alum? Tony Rizza has deep pockets. I could see him leaving Wake.

Not a bad idea naming the field after Ray Reid.

As I mentioned before in these threads, I kind of figured Reid would retire after a full season of coaching the team in the new soccer facility, but I have to admit I wasn't totally confident it would happen. People talk about the donation he made to the soccer facility, but like Coach Penders of the baseball team did with the new baseball facilities, from what I can tell Reid put in plenty of time and effort into getting the soccer facility off the ground so to speak. Given that time and effort, I can understand that even though the men's soccer program was clearly in decline the last several years, that Reid wanted and was given the opportunity to coach the team in the new stadium for at least a season.

Muus is a Southern alum (played under Reid before Reid coached UConn) and was a UConn assistant 97-00. Would be a home run hire to snag him away from Wake, but if I'm him I don't leave for soccer reasons. Who knows, maybe he has family up here still.

I appreciate Coach Reid and his career has been full of fantastic successes.
While he is big time, it was difficult to replace an icon.
The recruitment game as well as much of the tactical training has become an issue since he lost John Deeley and not sure if RR can relate to the new players. Connecticut has a ton of soccer talent and UConn needs to keep more home.
I'd love to see Dan Donigan come back, take a younger guy who will be his study and return UConn to it's place among the elites. The facilities are in place and there is a huge amount of people in the area with an desire for a successful UConn soccer program. Gbandi may be that understudy for Donigan.
I would look at Kiefer before Brenner, simply because WFU has enjoyed a history of good teams and players and Brenner has not coached at the top position yet.
Marc Hubbard at New Hampshire has done wonders at that school and I agree he deserves a serious look but I really think that UConn needs someone who is a big name

Those preferred qualifications certainly narrow it down a lot. 6 years plus D1 head coaching experience, multiple ncaa tournaments in last 5 years, experience leading team to conference championships, and history of finishing in the top 25 RPI. Certainly appears to be someone who is a current head coach. And a good one.

Yeah, I thought that too. Any idea who it is?

If he can get UNH to #10 in the country and losing only 1-0 to #1 Oregon State in the 3rd round of the tourney this year, what do you think he could do here? More than 10 wins in every season, 5 straight tourney appearances, a 87-25-16 record as their head coach. I don't care about a name, I want success.

All you college soccer experts haven’t figured out who the intended hire is yet? There can’t be that many people who meet the preferred qualifications in the posting.

All of the mentioned head coaches on here from UNH, Wake, and Marshall would fit those parameters. NC state didn’t finish in the top 25 rpi this season. Pretty much any current head coach at a successful program would qualify.

An odd thought. In recent years I thought as they both aged, Ray Reid and Billy Joel were becoming doppelgängers of each other. Not that Ray Reid ever thought of starting a musical career, but they are both from Long Island.
