Moving photos and music files from old laptop

I have 10-y/o Sony VAio laptop near death. Been painstakingly loading photos onto flash drives (limited capacity) and then downloading onto new laptop. Not fast by any means.

I actually have an external hard drive collecting dust. I'm guessing a ****load of photos will fit on this device allowing for faster transfers?

I used PC Mover Pro to transfer about 700 GB of music, image and other files from an older computer to a new one. Went quite fast. My wife just moved data from one Mac laptop to another with migration assistant and it was blazing fast w/ a wire connection.
