LOCAL HERO -- a comedy with a touch of the mystical from writer/director bill forsyth that came out 20-30 years ago. mostly about the inhabitants of a small coastal village in scotland that is being targeted as site for an oil terminal by a texas outfit. it's very funny but has a lot of soul too, and the characters are great. big star is burt lancaster, the oil tycoon who appears late in the flick but comes with a surprising revelation. this was a well-regarded movie that didn't do great box office. neither of these is likely to show up as a TV offering. maybe streaming. i've got dvds to revisit when i'm in the mood. every christmas i watch LOVE ACTUALLY, which often shows up during the holidays ... but NOT in this thread. there are many A-listers in the separate but related segments and keira knightley is incredibly luminous. it's hilarious at times, sentimenl at times but i especially love its music -- in particular use of the beach boys' 'god only knows' played behind the concluding scene of arrivals at a london airport.
