Calhoun, a three-time national champion himself, is viewed favorably by 35 percent of voters and unfavorably by 20 percent.

I guess 65% of the people in this state don't like WINNERS.

Calhoun is more prickly and probably rubs more people the wrong. Additionally Auriemma is the US National coach right now. Lots of favorable publicity.

I've met both Calhoun and Auriemma and let's just say Calhoun was much more likable in my eyes. Geno's behavior left something to be desired.

agree - timing is everything with polls. Take it right 2011, 2004 or 1999 or right after the Hardwick suit was filed and the results would be different.

Ben Doody? Talk about an unfortunate surname.

I always wondered if Howdy had any kids.

I am not surprised by that. Calhoun seems to keep it more real.

I've never spent time with Calhoun, but I find it hard to believe I could meet a bigger a**hole than Geno the two times i've been around him. That sentiment is shared by everyone else I know who has met him as well.

All I need to know about Geno is when he berated that girl who worked for the UConn school newspaper and trying to go after a girl who played on an opposing team. A jerk.

Geno is kind of that one girlfriend's father we've all had at one point or another.

Honestly, Geno is just more charismatic than Calhoun. Whether Calhoun is the nicer person or not. It doesn't matter when all a majority of people see of him is through the media. Personally, I liked Geno the few times I've met him, but I could see where his personality would not mesh well with a lot of people.

I've never met either guy, but have been told Geno is pretty much like he appears on his CPTV show. Smart aleck, ball-buster type. I "get" that type. I grew up with a lot of guys like that. I can imagine it turning some people off, but I get a kick out of him. From what I see of Jim, he sometimes looks and acts like a maniac. Sometimes even embarrassing to watch. I have heard how different he is in private, and he's been great for all of us. I think I "get" tough coaches type too, but I can understand people that don't know either one preferring Geno. He usually gets more laughs.

Geno is arrogant and sarcastic. He's also loyal, charismatic and caring. In other words, your basic human being with positive and negative traits.

The press loves to portray him as a jerk - it sells papers, especially in the South (you know where), South Bend and New Jersey. What gets less coverage is the fact that he was the first coach to donate to Pat Summitt's foundation to fund Alzheimer's research, he fund-raises tirelessly for the American Cancer Society and he constantly deflects praise for him onto his players. He's also a loving father and husband. But, a kind Geno doesn't sell newspapers and you guys don't really care enough to search out the few articles that exist on his good deeds so you wouldn't know that.

I met JC once, albeit in a restaurant after a big game (UConn-Mich St) and not the ideal circumstances, but to say he was likable is quite a stretch. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt though because I know he was very nice to my grandparents when they were nearing the end of their lives. Geno honestly reminds me of Calipari. I think if he were at another school he would be really disliked by the UConn brethren.

The press loves to portray Geno as a jerk? I think the press has been extremely fair to Geno over the years, they seem to hammer Calhoun. The time I met Geno it was at a golf charity and to be honest Geno had too much to drink and was pretty much harassing a couple of the young women who were working the function, I guess I didn't catch him on his best day.

I've met Geno twice. Honestly, he seems like a nice guy who's gone slightly crazy thanks to being around women all the time for over 25 years.

Never met Calhoun, but the times I've met Geno, he's been really likable.

What's most telling to me, though, is the fact that both the men's and the women's alumni continue to come back to campus every chance they get. That shows they're doing a lot of things right as both coaches AND people.

(And really, I trust the relationships they have with people they knew and coached every day over the stories of people on this message board.)

Sorry 68 but if you're embarrassed by being a fan of a winning program then such is life. The man is a passionate coach, has lit into a few guys deservingly and if they can't take it then they hit the road. He makes you a better player and better person if you stick it out so if there is anything embarrassing about that, I'm not sure what you would be proud of!!

Geno seems fine to me also although I get the aloofness portrayed but it takes some confidence to be him or Jim doesn't it?

I've met both men and liked both of them. They have a lot in common as basketball coaches but as individuals they're different. One isn't "better" than the other or, IMO, more or less likable. Whether a person is simpatico with JC or Geno probably depends on their own personality.

FYI, Geno's aloofness comes from the same place as his brashness - he was a 7 year old non-English speaking immigrant in Philly that needed to learn to protect himself somehow. He picked up the Philly attitude and everything that came with it. Fellow Philadelphian and ND head coach Muffet McGraw summed it up a few months ago, "For people who don't know Philly, the saying is when they don't have anything better to do, they go to the airport and boo bad landings," McGraw said. "I think the Philadelphia coaches are brash and outspoken. I think there's a lot of sarcasm used. I think that's something that even when my team had to deal with it, I'm going to be honest and I'm going to tell you. And I think that's how most of those coaches are."

My boss is a "Philly guy" and real proud of it as we'll as some guys in my company who work out of that area. Same type of dispositions but great guys.......confident is closer than arrogant........Phillies, Eagles and Flyers are the best teams on earth according to them but how is that different from Yankee/Giants or red Sox/Pats fans........besides the fact the Sox/Pats fans aren't really bright!! LOL
