What happens if and when the P-5 schools leave the NCAA and form their own organization? A majority of those schools favor doing that.

They’ll be scheduling their own “national championships” in football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc. How badly will that hurt our athletic dept?

Big East prolly comes along would be my guess. They have good markets, good brands, good results and Fox backing.

Makes sense for football sure, there is no chance for basketball though.

Whatever happens, the NCAA schools left behind have to hang on to the MARCH MADNESS name. Don't sell it to the P5 schools.

Three things happen:
1 There will be a mad scramble among a group of schools to be included. The AAC plus UConn BYU Boise St and a few others
2 The NCAA tournament as we know it will go the way of the NIT. Probably go down to 32 teams again or something like that
3 The remaining schools will become for all intents and purposes Division 2 even though they don’t call it that.

on what planet does somebody think the Big East will be included?

If you read the results of the survey that is referenced but not cited, the majority opinion is to consider a different path for P5 football with the explicit preference for maintaining the NCAA basketball with March madness.

If a divorce occurs I predict
1. The Big East basketball gets included in the Big Boy's Tournament.
2. Non P5 football schools become akin the FCS.
3. UConn stops the financial drain and terminates its football program.

UConn's basketball is in a better position for the future in the Big East that if it remained in the AAC.

The planet where they have three of the last five national champions?

Uh, no. If it happens it will be about football. On no planet will a bunch of no football programs be invited to the part. The SEC, B12, Clemson etc consider the NCAA tournament to be filler between football season and spring football. They aren’t inviting the Big East.
It would have a major impact on a few other sports. Lacrosse, hockey all have many major programs outside the P5. But basketball, nah.

_______

I am not sure how closely poster "free scooter" follows college basketball but if s/he did then s/he would know that
* the teams that makeup the Big East have won 3 of the last 6 NCAA men's basketball tournaments (2014, 2916, 2018),
* has had 2 of the last 8 number #1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament
* as a conference finished with the highest RPI in the abridged 2019- 20 season.

My fellow UConn friends are sorely mistaken if they believe that the Big Easy is an easy league. There are no easy games. Creighton, Xavier, and Butler are very good progrrams.

A majority of Power 5 athletic leaders who participated in a recent survey were "very or somewhat likely" to support the creation of a fourth division within the NCAA for the Power 5 conferences to compete in sports other than basketball, according to data released Tuesday by the Knight Commission for Intercollegiate Athletics.

The 15-minute online survey revealed a willingness by athletic administrators to consider reforms that would radically restructure Division I's most competitive levels, including separating FBS football from the NCAA, but almost 80% of participants indicated it is "essential" to keep all current Division I schools in the same men's basketball tournament.

Thanks Zissou...It IS "other than basketball".

Football makes sense...basketball did not...and I do not think that soccer really does.

After football, basketball is where the money is. If you are going to leave the NCAA, why not pick up all the cash you can on the way out?

I was thinking competition wise....Of the 350 basketball teams, there is a better chance of smaller programs finishing in the Elite Eight than there is in a smaler school finishing in a 4 team playoff in football..... with only 120 participants. Basketball can be more inclusive.

Smaller schools with just a couple of premier basketball players can finish quite well...not so in football where it takes a platoon of above average players.

You are lumping together the quality of the basketball on the court with the power of the athletic departments. It's comparing apples and oranges. No one here is arguing that the Big East's on court quality doesn't compare with the P-5 schools. They are just telling you that qualify of basketball play isn't going to determine who, if anyone, moves on from the NCAA with the P-5 conferences. You're free to disagree with their prediction of the future, but talking about quality of play isn't even a disagreement -- just one fact, and not a particularly relevant one.

Let the P5 schools go. In everything except football, within 5-7 years, they'll be begging their way back in. Having their own breakaway hoops tourney will be a disaster. NCAA should boycott them in all other Olympic sports too. F them

The survey suggests that only P5 football would form a new division with everything else remaining the same.

Football is the biggest money maker for the P5 schools because they keep all football money and the NCAA basketball tournament funds the NCAA including all of the sports championships, etc. If the P5 broke away in all sports, they would have to fund and run all of their championships, etc. Bottom line is that it doesn't make that much sense financially for the P5 to pull all sports from the NCAA.

Disagree since the NCAA funds it's entire operations from March Madness. If the P5 (plus a few more, say the American, BYU, Boise St. and the BE) broke off and ran it's own tournament all the net cash goes to the P5's benefit. It's an easy money grab.

not that easy. I think the audience would be alienated and smaller. There is also a bigger anti-trust risk.

Football is a little different as it has slowly evolved to P5 and everyone else. Shutting out a contending UCF confirmed the CFP is for the P5.

Maybe, but I think that you underestimate the power of the P5 and their alumni. They will have, what, the at least one school in 48 states. Something close to that anyway. If you take the P5, BYU, Boise, the American and the BE, who is left to object? (Yes, the other schools but if the senator they are complaining to already has a land grant school telling them that autonomy is the biggest thing since sliced bread who are they going to listen to?

The P5 is a group of All Sports conferences.....You don't play football...you won't be in.

True, but they lack enough school to be able to host March Madness. They'd have to bring more schools in to make that work. If you saying that the P5 would leave money on the table out of principle... well, we can agree to disagree.

Yep...we agree to disagree....in BB...you can't leave out a Villanova or Gonzaga...yet neither make any sense at all in a football first league.

BB will continue on with 350 programs competing for the NC and the P5 will stay with their conferences...
