.... was the way we lost.
I've said all along that to win games this season we needed to re-establish a solid running game that kept defenses honest and set up some play action. To do that, we needed a physical back to compliment McCombs and an OL rededicated to physical run blocking. I can only conclude that this coaching staff shares none of this thinking. We have a running back who goes down every time a DLman farts and does not have breakaway speed. So defenses can tee off at the line of scrimmage. It amazes me that we appear not to have a back capable to complimenting McCombs, let alone one that just isn't better overall.
The other reason I believe a solid running game was so important was that I did not believe the defense could possibly be as good as it was last season given the losses to graduation and the NFL. Ball control by the offense would keep the defense off the field much more than it was last season. Frankly, I had no idea the defense would regress to the level it did on Thursday. We had no pass rush with our DL and, frankly, Stewart was horrific.
The physical nature that seemed to define UCONN football on both sides of the ball seems to be totally lost under this coaching staff. It has been my strong sense since P and GDL took over that they view college football as the same technical exercise that it is in the NFL. I just don't see where this gets righted. I predicted a 3-4 win season and it may very well be something like 2.
