STORRS, Conn. -- Moriah Jefferson has never settled for second best. Since she started competing in eighth grade for the Texas Home Educators Sports Association and later moved on to the University of Connecticut, her basketball teams have never lost the last game of their season.

The 5-foot-7 point guard would be the best player on her college team at about every school in the country. But at UConn, she isn't considered by most to be the best player.

The Glenn Heights, Texas native, who will be honored alongside her classmates Breanna Stewart,Morgan Tuck, and Briana Pulido prior to the top-ranked Huskies' game with Tulane at Gampel Pavilion on Saturday, could not care less. The two-time national Player of the Year, though, does.

"I look at Moriah and she's very capable," former UConn All-American and three-time Olympic gold medalist Sue Bird of the Seattle Storm said. "She has plenty of speed and quickness and she's a good shooter so you can't just leave her open. She's good enough defensively to guard the other team's point guard. And having that UConn pedigree and being part of that program where it's always team-first and you're winning national championships, that's only going to help her going forward."

Faint Praise
Doesn't seem all that enthusiastic.

But then read what Jen has to say about her and listen to what Lin Dunn thinks - she implied for the right team she might be selected ahead of Breanna - she thinks CT for example would have to trade 3 and 4 and maybe another player to move up to #2!

Sue has praised Moriah extensively in the past...Sue's a competitor, she knows she has to play against her next year! Can't hype her too much...

And I thought that Kelly Faris was the queen of the post-season! :)

Yeah but if you look at the competition that Moriah faced her first two years playing varsity it really doesn't compare to what either Kelly or Maya were facing in their early years, so I'm not sure we can really crown Moriah. And her team in those first couple of years was just loaded and really carried her. Kelly really had to carry her team her senior year in HS because they had graduated I think it was four starters.

I really think I have to stick with Kelly as the Queen of the post-season - it is a real pity that her father refused to keep any stats, because I am sure they would bear me out, based on the few bits of video I have been able to find.

I mean you are really not going trot out that trite argument that all that matter is rings and five is better than four!
:cool::rolleyes::eek::confused::D:);)

Well, that argument has some merit. Check my avatar. In addition to being fun to watch, Maya has become the ultimate winner.

I was noting Sue's appraisal, not others:
"Good enough defensively"
Give me a break.

Moriah Jefferson is a great advertisement for the University of Connecticut. How the UConn coaches can take a raw natural talent and mold her into a player ready for the next level. I have read many saying that HS stars want to play at UConn to win national championships. I am sure that is part of it, but I think they choose UConn primarily for the same reason that students want to go to MIT for engineering or Yale for English literature. You want to go to the school that will best prepare you to excel as a professional after you graduate.
