I have always appreciated Morgan Tuck's game, but she is really taking it to another level. She never plays out of control. It is a joy to watch. Morgan is so steady and the key to UCONN's success.

Her leadership is crucial. It was always cited as her strength even in the elite context of USA basketball and is still her strength now -- along with a calmly executed boatload of skills.

And I can't help thinking, if that leadership is crucial now, imagine how crucial it will be to next year's young team. She should do what's best for her, but a fan can hope she stays the course.

FYI, excerpt from the Courant today:

"We came over to shoot-around [on Friday at Houston] and she started warming up," said Auriemma of Tuck, who had 22 points and 12 rebounds in Sunday's 75-59 win over South Florida. "She went over Rosemary [Ragle, the athletic trainer] and said it [the knee] wasn't feeling good. We gave her a little more time to get loose. ... But she said it doesn't feel good. So why make it worse? Let's take some precautions and not do it.



"Tomorrow she could wake up and feel great. We had a conversation on the plane on the way down [to Houston]. I said, 'Morgan, do you ever know when it's coming?' She said, 'No, I'll wake up in the morning and go to practice and I won't even know it. The next day I'll walk to class and it hurts.' It's just one of those weird things."

Without Tuck, UConn struggled to get started at Houston.

"I guess we showed how important Morgan Tuck is to our team, huh?" said Auriemma. "With all the things that she's been fighting through, she always seems to show up at game time. It's a long season. You just want everybody to be healthy and good, 100 percent at the end of March."

As much a fan of Geno that I am, I must admit that I am continually surprised that the offense does not focus more often than it does on working the ball into Morgan in the low paint. She is a load to handle defensively down there...her raw power and strength is undeniable, resulting inevitably in high percentage shot opportunities, and her ability to draw fouls and convert resulting free throws is among the team's best. Too often, I think, as part of its up-tempo game, the team relies on the quick opportunity from behind the arc rather than working the shot clock more patiently and getting the ball down low to its star.

Hey Bigpetunia - I heard someone describe the UConn offense as 5 quarterbacks --- when each player has the ball they compute the info and react. They always have 5 options--pass to one of the other 4 or shoot/dribble/drive. They look at all 4 team mates and hit the most open man. If Tuck is open , they want to get it to her. The high/low with Stewie is the best method of getting the ball to Tuck cause Stewie brings some attention. Otherwise, Tuck has to be open enough for that entry pass from someone else. Tough when the opposition clogs the middle.

You don't want one player to be the focus of your scoring. UCONN has 5 starters who are more than capably of putting up double figures every night. Make our opponents pick their "poison" when defending. Double Stewie, you know some one is wide open. Double Morgan, same thing. This along with the motion offense makes it very difficult to defend UCONN. You don't want to change that.

In an interview last year, Morgan referred to herself, or rather stated that she liked to think of herself, as "The Silent Assassin". It really is a great moniker for her, as she is quiet, blends into the background, and when they are least suspecting, she grinds her opponent into tiny little meatballs. She is clearly the swizzle-stick in the Huskies drink.

The announcer for the USF game (can't remember her name, and I'm not sure that I care for her style) referred to her as a "quiet assassin"; I am guessing that she had that one loaded and misfired a bit.

For her (RS) Senior season, that's what will be on MY helmet. She has more than earned it.
