As the 3pt shooting improves the lane will open up more for players like Paige/Chen/KK/Azzi/Sarah and Jana (and eventually Aubrey when she comes back.). The issue has been the team is not whole yet which is why for example their 3pt shooting is as low as it is. That's why on the postgame threads those being critical of this team in November are a bit nuts. Other than Paige everything about this team is much different,. Therefore to expect "complete games" from 18-20 year olds this early on a consistent basis is nuts. There shouldn't be too much worry for this team until they face South Carolina. That's their barometer. They may very well lose a couple or could be undefeated. I know many are pointing to the ND game but both teams are going to be much different in March than they are in December. And probably the same with SoCal. In regard to being a whole team as it affects UCONN's overall stats; listen to what Meg Culmo said regarding the Holy Cross coach's strategy. It was to force Paige to be a passer and was okay for anyone else to shoot. Do we really think that is a viable strategy when Sarah and Azzi get more and more comfortable for example shooting 3's? UCONN took 31 3's in the game and shot over 40% probably the best for the season. Do we really think teams like South Carolina are going to "allow" Azzi and Sarah to have open 3's as their pregame strategy? And look at the UNC game in which they changed the pace of the game by playing zone. Overall how do we think that strategy will work as both Azzi and Sarah get more comfortable? So long and adieu you Spanish ladies . . . As far as Jana - she alone is the cause for the team f't shooting at only 67%. Take away her ft% and the team is shooting 76%. We can all see the potential but shouldn't ignore the 35.7% f/t shooting %. I know some are clamoring for her to start but you can't start a player this awful at the free throw line in which offensive execution is so important while at the same time expect "40 minutes of complete ball." This is our best potential player for inside scoring and highlights another example why UCONN is not whole yet. BTW Jana is 8th on the team in terms of True Field Goal %. (TS%). Just looking at fg% is not enough. Therefore, I am hopeful that especailly if the team keeps winning through December that any absurd posts about the team not giving full effort or going after the coach because they are only winning by 15-40 points vs 25-60 will just stop.
