Really gotta start giving more minutes to Niels. Putting him in the during the 2nd half is awkward and it is tough to emerge after sitting a whole half. He plays small forward like a guard and can add another needed ball handler on this team, something Daniels can't really do. Better shot, better defense and awareness are reasons Giffey should get the nod over Daniels.

Giffey played really confidently last night. I'm hoping he keeps it up the rest of the season. He could become very valuable at breaking zones.

He never shoots. He makes a nice pass here or there, and he hustles. But I just don't think he contributes enough.

Didn't Giffey score 15 against UK in maui last year?? He has potential, his teammates need to trust him more.

I think having somebody out there who is not concerned about his scoring would be beneficial for this team.

He did score 15 against Kentucky last in November 2010. He hasn't really done much since.

Brochacho, part of the problem is that this team doesn't have enough offensive threats. AO can make a nice move here or there. Drummond is a garbage man. Roscoe can shoot foul-line and in. But they need someone else to step up. Part of what makes good teams is that they have multiple threats. UConn really only has 3.

Giffey scored 14 against UK.

Yeah, you're right about the team. But I feel as if AO and AD would be much more effective in the post with Giff feeding them, I think he is the best on the team for feeding the post.

mau, who are you talking to. I would imagine me, but it could be to the person who attacked Daniels.

If it was related to my comments on Giffey--I like him. I want him to do well. But he doesn't attack on offense. He's so passive.

I think it clearly comes down to who is the bigger liablity right now and that is Daniels

For all this talk about Giffey feeding the post, he's got 10 assists this year, and 18 all of last year. Daniels has 15.

In the past 5 games, they each had a DNP.

Giffey had a total of 2 points (25% shooting, 0-1 from 3), 0 assists, 2 rebs, 1 blk, in 17 total minutes.
Daniels had 11 points (25% shooting, 3-8 from 3), 2 assists, 4 rebs, 1 blk, in 35 minutes (most coming in one game).

Giffey played better defense against Syracuse--a bit. He had that nice foul on Waiters. He had a nice hustle rebound. But he also had his shot blocked in a stupid drive that led to a run-out.

I think Daniels can be very good. I think Giffey can be the 6th man on a championship team--hell, he was already the 7th or 8th man on last years.

I think Daniels has the potential to be a good player but that his confidence is rattled to the point where he was never able to recover this year and don't think he will be able to the rest of the year. Next year he could show big improvement though.

Giffey meanwhile I think looked good yesterday. I really think that when he's a senior he will be a very good player for this team.

No problem.

I'm not opposed to Giffey. Hell, I think he should be the first guy off the bench after Napier/Boat. But if he's passive and not creating--as he too frequently does--bring in Daniels.

I just fear totally benching Daniels could kill his confidence and make him start second guessing everything. He clearly has the skills to emerge and probably will but for now he doesn't have the right 'feel'.

DD just needs to get stronger. Add 15 lbs of muscle in the off season. Once BE started his numbers went south. 30% shooting,17% from three. Last night missed two open three's and blew a layup off a great fast break feed. Hopefully next year he will be a major contributor.

They played ten minutes amongst the two of them last night - do you suggest we give Niels 1 or 2 of those 5? Should be a big impact.

Deandre can be good, but might not come into form for a little bit. He's not quick enough to make up for his lack of strength. The kid needs to hit the weight room to be effective in the BE.

Yeah, because struggling as a freshman obviously means he will never be a good collegiate basketball player.
Two words for those ready to write-off Deandre Daniels as a bust: Curtis Kelly. He was a top recruit who struggled at UCONN but ended up having a very solid career at Kansas State. As a matter of fact, I remember in 2009-10 when many posters on the old Boneyard site were wishing he was still a Husky. Be careful writing kids off, especially with the potential status of the team next season. We will very likely need him to play a big role next season so I think we should stay positive about him or not post anything. Posting comments like "He sucks" is a good way to chase away players and is that something we can afford to do given APR, possible tourney ineligibility next season, NBA defections etc? I will reserve my "he sucks" comments for Blaney because I don't consider him vital to next season and beyond, but I won't say it about players. It's one thing to critique a player's play, but another to basically call someone garbage.

he's been too passive, but he came out with fire yesterday and contributed. i would suggest most would be gunshy the way calhoun hammered him for the slightest mistake. i really hope he will go out and really play with aggression and smarts to show what he is capable of.

When you're open you have to be confident to take the wide open shot, or even try to dribble and create something. I would rather not see the charge that he had yesterday, but at least force the defense to react to you and then pass to someone else that is wide open instead of the exaggerated jab steps and pivots out on the perimeter. That is the part of the difference b/w Syracuse and UConn. Experience is part of it but they also bring in guys like Southerland who aren't afraid to shoot when they're open and they have that confidence to make a play. We have 3 wings and a PF who look scared to shoot and when they do it doesn't seem like they have much confidence that the shot will go in.
