Four of the five "power-5" conference tournaments wrapped up yesterday, but still plenty of action today:

Big East semifinals:
  • #2 Creighton vs. #3 Marquette, 4:00 ET (FS1). Both teams have had great seasons and will be in the NCAA tournament. Creighton swept Marquette in the regular season. But Marquette was the only Big East team to beat DePaul this year, and did it twice.
  • #1 DePaul vs. #5 St. John's, 6:30 ET (FS1). DePaul is in strong contention for the final top-16 hosting spot. St. John's upset DePaul in last year's Big East semifinals and went on to steal the automatic bid. Can St. John's repeat the feat?
AAC championship game:
  • UConn vs. South Florida, 7:00p ET (ESPN2). South Florida left no doubt about its at-large bid with a gritty win over Temple yesterday. USF may be one of the few teams in the country with even less depth than UConn, but they've somehow managed to fight through.
Big 12 championship game:
  • Baylor vs. West Virginia, 9:00 ET (FS1). WV demolished Oklahoma and outplayed Texas to get to the final. In their last meeting, WV played Baylor very close in Waco. If Creme's projection of WV as a #8 seed is correct, they are the most dangerous #8 seed I can remember seeing.

Meh... The exciting tourneys have been completed. The only one I care about from here on out is the Colonial.

Tonight is all about the Colonial men and the Southern men. Go UNC-W and UNC-G

Have you seen Marquette play? They're undersized and play mostly a 4-guard lineup. But they are FAST and fun to watch.

Marquette is up by 7 early in the 4th quarter over Creighton.

Creighton, at #23, just got its first AP top-25 ranking in 25 years. That will be short-lived if they lose this game.

Marquette gets the win over Creighton, 72-65, after having been swept by the Bluejays in the regular season.

Marquette does have the advantage of playing the conference tournament on its home court. They will be tough to beat in tomorrow's championship game.

Triad will be overjoyed to know that with Creighton's loss, South Florida will likely re-enter the AP top 25 next Monday :p

So just now I learned that Sarah Kustok, the impressive studio analyst for Fox's WBB broadcasts, played at DePaul for Coach Bruno.

DePaul is leading St. John's by 16 early in the 4th quarter in a low-scoring game, 43-27.

Quinnipiac became the 8th team to secure its spot in The Dance, with a win over Rider in the Mid-American final. The Bobcats are one of those mid-majors that get no media attention, but they went 27-6 and played a top-10 nonconference SOS. They are now #33 in the RPI. Their resume includes a quality road win at Dayton and a 3-point loss at Temple.

Oops, I meant to say the Metro Atlantic (MAAC) final. Mid-American is in a totally different part of the country.

Another interesting stat I just learned:

Baylor has won six consecutive conference tournament titles (and going for its seventh). This is the nation's longest conference tournament winning streak.

It's not easy to find a team record in WCBB not owned by UConn.

West Virginia has started well on offense, leading 15-12 at the first media timeout.

Not many people outside the Big-12 know about Tynice Martin, but I'm already predicting she will get major looks for All-American next year.

Well WVU has come to play! 22-14 WVU after 1.

I just can't put my finger on the Baylor program. At times Mulkey does a great job (2005, 2010, 2012) and others her team came out in big spots unprepared in a big game (2011, 2013, 2016).

WVU was a bubble team before this tournament? Wow.

Yeah and that was mostly because their nonconference SOS made Maryland's look tough. I personally believe they should be at least a #7 seed, even if they don't end up winning this game.

If they end up the #8 seed in Storrs, UConn better take them very seriously.

On the men's side. Tough tough night. UNC-Greensboro loses in the conference finals in a heartbreaker. :(:(:(:(:(
I feel so bad for those kids. They get a automatic berth to the Nit... But that's little consolation at this point.

Ha. Well no, not sure. West Virginia may get that spot instead. They definitely will if they hang on to beat Baylor.

They need to keep west Virginia the heck outta Durham for the ncaas

Well Creme thinks they're no higher than a #7 so you might be safe. There is no high seed that wants to see this WVU team coming to town.

But still, wouldn't it be worth it just knowing that WVU denied South Florida its spot in the top 25?

And are you still sticking by your statement that all the exciting tourneys were completed before tonight?

Actually thinking about it.. The most exciting tournament finals are the one-bid leagues.. Same as the men.

These tournaments would be more exciting without UCONN in the mix. Notre Dame's ACC record demonstrates the danger they bring to the final four. The Irish are the biggest threat to the drive for five.
