MoJeff and Stewie.JPG

The physical differences between Moriah Jefferson and Breanna Stewart are dramatic enough to be noticeable. Stewie, at 6'4" tall, is long and lanky. MoJeff is 5'7" (maybe) and compact like a expensive two-seat sports car. Stewie's build is perfect for scoring, blocking and rebounding a basketball. MoJeff is shaped much more for dribbling, passing and stealing that same basketball. Even their early years were different. Stewie grew up in Syracuse, New York (land of snow and ice) and attended public school. MoJeff lived outside of Dallas, Texas (where it is warm and sunny) and was home schooled. But that is where the differences end, and their wonderful journey begins.

As the #1 and #2 rated prospects in high school basketball two years ago, Stewart and Jefferson both decided UConn and Geno Auriemma were best fit for the next four years of their basketball careers. MoJeff as the next great point guard and Stewie as a game dominating power forward. As is often the case, both took their place in line at UConn their freshman years, with occasional flashes of brilliance, but also periods of adjustment and learning. But the end of the year and the NCAA tournament brought out the superstar in Stewie and confirmed to UConn nation that MoJeff was something very special.

After 29 games, in 11 states, over 4 months, MoJeff and Stewie have played 848 and 849 minutes of basketball, respectively. Their statistics, while reflecting the special skills each brings to UConn's brand of basketball, are surprisingly balanced. As expected, MoJeff leads the team in assists with 152 and steals with 76. But Stewie is not far behind with 95 assists and 46 steals. While Stewart fills her role as the #2 rebounder (232) and #1 shot blocker (82), Jefferson has chipped in with a surprising 91 rebounds and 7 monster blocks.

Shooting % from the field, 3 pt range and the free throw line is 51%, 38% and 77% for Stewie and 57%, 37% and 76% for MoJeff. Stewie scores more, but shoots twice as often. Turnovers are 46 for MoJeff and 54 for Stewie, similar and incredibly low for how much they both handle the ball. On a team with two amazing All-American seniors, MoJeff or Stewie still lead the team in scoring, steals, assists, blocks, free throws and offensive rebounds.

These two special young ladies share two more things in common. Both are incredibly talented, yet remarkably unselfish, teammates with a burning desire to excel and win. And both reflect wonderful parents who taught life's lessons about family, humility and hard work, early and well.

Go Huskies..!!

Great job David..........They certainly help make up an outstanding sophomore class when you throw in Morgan.

If MoJeff could get in that extra minute to catch Stewie, I'm sure she'd be level on the blocks too.

And despite Stewie's teasing remark at SMU that she taught MoJeff everything she knew about the art of the block, we all know who taught who there.

Great picture! Someone should show Geno to prove that Morgan has teeth.
