After positive tests at both Drake and Bradley, Missouri State - a lock for an at-large bid - pulled out of their conference tourney. Don’t want to risk COVID keeping them out of the NCAAs.

This means someone who probably would not have gotten in will now win the MVC conference tournament and get an automatic bid. Teams already on the bubble will now have a harder time (Mississippi State is discussed as most likely to be affected).

Should Mississippi State even be in the discussion regardless?
??? Well, it just got harder for them. But they might be better than Drake or Illinois State or whoever wins the MVC now.

I'm trying to parse this windbag mealy-mouthed explanation from the conference PR hacks.

So ... Bradley (and Drake) had "Tier 1 personnel" test positive on Friday night. But they were both given the green light because "contact tracing" found they had "enough available and non-impacted players and bench personnel to safely compete."

So if I'm reading this bureaucratic gibberish accurately, it all hinged on how accurate and thorough the contact tracing was, which in turn hinges largely on how honest people are in self-reporting.

I'm starting to understand how there have miraculously been zero COVID cancellations across 32 conference tournaments involving hundreds of teams and thousands of players and bench personnel.

You're reading it correctly.

It's the same way things are done where I work. There are actually not that many people in my organization coming to work (I'm one of the lucky few), but there's a lot or construction in my building. I know there have been positives among the construction workers, but no thanks to my management. They don't have to report anything but "close contact", i. e., more than 15 minutes within six feet of one person. We're also not required to keep close track of where we go and whom we interact with, and I've never been contacted for contact tracing regarding the at least two positive tests among the people working in the same building as I. It's not all that big, and I have a lot of contact with the construction personnel.

I can't understand why college sports are having issues with COVID. I have been to 2 travel baseball (ages 16-18) tournaments in the last 3 weeks (and since 6/1/2020, over a dozen) and there are NO MASKS, NO SOCIAL DISTANCING and NO ISSUES!

Instead of testing everyone involved every day, why not just vaccinate everyone and move on.

If someone happens to still get it, threat them, and move on. No need to quarantine the whole team.

You want college athletes to jump the line and get vaccinated before others with higher risk factors?

I knew this was going to be a response from someone.

Let me tell you about "jumping in line". The teachers in my county jumped the line so that in person learning could happen. Guess What! Over 60% are still working from home and refuse to go back. Let the people that would actually use the vaccine get it.

I don't know what the vaccine cost, but doing thousands of tests a day on athletes has to cost more that the vaccine.

I am all for anyone who will use the vaccine to get there lives back to normal getting it first!

Uhhh there are still lot of people who will “actually use it” who are waiting.
