Tulsa has hung in for most of the game but Maya hitting big shots. Maya is the best at rising above her defender to get off a shot that I've seen. Her lower body strength allows her to elevate even when defended closely.

Sims with her 4th game with 20+ points. Diggins with a terrible shooting night.

That's 11 times Maya has had 30+ this season. That breaks Diana's old record of 10 from 6 years ago.

In the final 5 minutes, the score was Maya 13 v. Tulsa 6. The rest of the Lynx had 2.

40 points on 22 shots. Nice!!

Coach Cheryl Reeve likes to refer to this stage of a ball game as "Maya Time". She was quoted thusly after the game against Tulsa.

But Geno can't win a national championship without Rebecca Lobo, Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, or Breanna Stewart...

Your statement is somewhat off base. Some truth, but ignores the basis of very good coaches and programs in sport. Does that mean Pat Summit couldn't win a championship without Catchings, Parker, etc. Or that Mulkey couldn't win a championship without Griner. Of course they could. But thats why the best players gravitate to those programs ( and others). Its mostly true in all sports (except for the money factor.) i.e. Duke, Kentucky, Uconn men's basketball; North Carolina women's soccer; Stanford women's swimming and on and on.

Odd addition to the conversation. Not sure what the connection is between Maya's performance and Geno's ability to win championships. Let's face it, having players like DT, Maya, Bird, Charles, Stewart, etc, certainly improves your chances of winning a championship. Interesting that Geno didn't win a championship with Maya her senior year and Mulkey didn't win a championship BG's senior year.

Would Mulkey have won a championship without Sophia Young or BG? Would JMP and GG have won a championship without...wait a minute. Without great players you are not going to win a NC.

I fully agree with you, but, it has been done:
Maryland 2006
Texas A&M 2011

One might argue that Purdue, Notre Dame, and Baylor in 2005 won their respective championships without great players; Very good players, obviously.

If you've got nine NCs stretched over five great players, you're clearly a great coach. I was parodying silly criticisms of Geno.

UConn won a record 150 games with Maya in the lineup. The average margin of victory was just ridiculous. Some question Maya's ability in close games. Well, she and Ketia stole a game at DePaul. After UConn scored an embarrassing 12 points in a half in a national championship game, Maya took the game over for a UConn win. In a rare loss, at Rutgers, Maya hit 2 treys in the last minutes to cut the lead and was 1 touch away from a game-tying shot. In her final game, she put up 36 on Notre Dame, but didn't get much help. Now in the WNBA, her coach, one of the best in the league, refers to "Maya time."

Why would anyone possibly doubt Maya's ability in close games??

North Carolina St. beat Houston when nobody thought they could. It happens. To win nine championships in nine attempts takes great players. You may win one, maybe two with very good players, but you will not win nine. By your logic, VAUConnFan, John Wooden wasn't much of a coach. Lew Alcindor, Bill Walton, Sidney Wicks and on and on, so Coach Wooden couldn't coach either. Great coaches make great players the best they can be. Baylor should have won at least two, if not three, championships. It doesn't happen just because you have great players and Baylor had two: Griner and Sims.

You have called me out for reasons not fully understood. I totally agree with the statement made that without great players you are not going to win a national championship. I also agree with the comment you made about it not happening just because you have great players. And, I agree with the bolded comment about winning nine championships in nine attempts takes great players. As far as I see, there is no disagreement.

Of the three years that Griner and Sims played together, they should have won one more championship, could have easily won two more. They caught Louisville on a Villanova and lost to Texas A&M after beating them three times previously that season(beating a team four times in one season has still not happened in the women's game). However, only winning one does not make Mulkey a bad coach. On the logic you presented, are you or anyone else willing to fault Coach Auriemma for only winning one national championship in the Lobo, Rizzotti, Wolters, Sales era that included three consecutive national players of the year, and a player better than all three of those players of the year?
John Wooden became a great coach in the latter part of his coaching career when he started coaching great players. Coach Wooden was probably always a very good coach, but who knew?
