MSU struggles on the road.

Do the Spartans need to win to keep their fading big dance dreams alive?

I will be attending this event with my iPad watching the UConn game, first half in the parking lot, the second half while watching a rejuvenated Terp team beat on a struggling Spartan team. MSU has been curious as some were predicting good things with this years squad as it had a top recruiting class coming in, strong returning core and then Sidney Cooks transferred and the season has been inconsistent to say the least. Is Cooks the first of many cracks in this foundation or just a minor mishap? Ironically, this could be similar to the Duke situation when Azura transferred out and the Duke program has been in a spiral since. JPM was from MSU so maybe a trade could be made to send JPM back to Lansing...

Well .. Duke was better in the two seasons after she transferred then the two season she was there. The two seasons since Lexie Brown transferred ... thats a different story.

I wouldnt want anything from MSU..... so a three way trade would be preferable.

They do have a road win at Rutgers

I hesitate to describe any single game in early February as "must win" for anyone, but Michigan State is facing a rapidly closing window. Their RPI is so low (#102) that they may need to go 6-2 in their last 8 games just to bring themselves to the bubble.

I wonder if the Rutgers win loses a little bit of luster after Rutgers lost at Minnesota.

The Big 10 has been a wired conference this season. But it seems Maryland, Iowa, Northwestern and Indiana are beginning to separate themselves from the rest of the conference.

High strung? Informant for the Feds? Loopy? Wired? or Weird?

Based on the warmups this looks like a mismatch. MSU a bit discombobulated on their warmup drills and a bit undersized when compared to the Terps.Do They have people hurt? They seem undermanned in numbers as well. Suzy and Brenda having a nice pregame chat though.

A little MD explosion in the lat two minutes.
24-14 MD end of first

Michigan State is a walking MASH unit. Two players lost for the season, three more who are out with injury.

They weren't very good to begin with buts its fuel to the fire at this point.

Especially since it's some of their best players. Madrekia Cook just tore her ACL on Wednesday in practice, apparently. Colley has been out since late December. Gaines was already out for the season.

oh god

I haven't really followed Michigan State much but that sucks to hear. Injuries are a killer. On a positive note, this gives the young players a chance to develop and grow up. Michigan State typically recruits pretty well so they probably have a lot of young inexperienced talent and playing a lot at one time can be a struggle. What is up with Colley?

I've only heard it described as a knee injury, haven't heard anything more specific about the injury or her status.

I was certainly expecting Maryland to win, but wow this is just a beat down. 68-29 w/ 14 minutes left in the game.

And now another MSU player down, maybe an ankle. McCutcheon.

94-53 MD final

Owusu 22 pts, 6 reb, 8 ast, 2 stl
Mikesell 21 pts, 3 reb, 5 ast, 3 stl

I had to leave halfway through the 3Q as it was so evident MSU was overmatched due to their injuries and that Maryland was moving the ball so well. Add in my slight depression of the UConn game and I felt it was best to get a bar, any bar well before closing time...

Suzy Merchant is taking a page out of Holly Warlick's book, saving Time Outs for no apparent reason. She was down 30-20 and had stabilized before Maryland went on a 15-0 run and then Suzy said, "hey, what are those things called where you can get the play to stop? Oh yeah, a time out, let's take one of those"...

Maryland has really improved; maybe they had some chemistry problems earlier in the season and they've worked it out.

The interesting thing is Maryland has 4 players out as well. Zoe Young and Channise Lewis is out with knee injuries. Olivia Owens had mono and then decided to redshirt. Mimi Collins was denied eligibility.

I thought Maryland made a mistake by starting Miller and Owusu to start the year. I saw a lot of the preseason practices and they were not worthy of starting. Once Watson and Jones were inserted into the starting lineup, the defense first started to pickup up. Then the rebounding. Now the offense is playing at a high level. Owusu and Miller are playing great coming of the bench and the other freshman Faith Masonius has had flashes of good play. If Shakira Austin can consistently be very good, Maryland is going to make some noise in the tournament.
