He's looked good every time out this spring...

4.1 inning, no runs, 5K against the Red Sox today. (There was a seven minute delay of the game when the first pitch thrown hit a beehive....that's a first.)

On the spring, he has nine innings pitched, no runs and 14 strike outs.

Well that just makes me feel good about the rope Bradley Jr. hit off him.

The good news for the Yankees was that Pineda's slider had most of the Red Sox' right-handed hitters lunging at pitches out of the strike zone. When place correctly (starting out around the lower thigh and diving out of the strike zone) it was almost impossible to lay off and impossible to hit. The bad news was that his fastball was 88-90 on ESPN's gun. That's well off where he used to be and may be a problem as hitters settle in against him. It will be interesting to see whether he keeps building up strength and gets up into the low-90s (probably not the mid-90s he was in 2011) or whether this is the pitcher he will be going forward.

Forgot all about Pineda...if he is the real deal, that would be huge for the Yankees...especially if CC is slipping a bit.

The other good news is the can't-miss catcher they gave up to get him has missed.

Him showing up 40 pounds overweight to spring training doesn't help. I thought Monetero was a can't miss the way he hit in the minors and when he first came up with Yanks.

And the can't miss catcher was caught in the Biogensis mess.

Lunging is what happens to hitters who are sitting fastball and get a slider. IMO the slider is the most difficult pitch because you don't have time to adjust to it unless you are sitting on it. Pineda should help the Yankees.

Almost true. Montero was considered to be a can't miss hitter - perhaps good enough that it would over shadow the fact that he wasn't a very good catcher. I think the Mariners figured that, worst case, they had a top notch DH for 10 years (a la Edgar Martinez). Instead they got an over-hyped, formerly PED enhanced, blob.

He wasn't a good defensive catcher. But he's still young enough (24) to be a very good MLB bat. Depends on his dedication and how hard he works. Even though he was sent down to AAA, he hit .310 this spring after he got in shape. Be interesting to see if Cano becomes a mentor.
