Is searching for a place to play football. Yes, the same Michael Dyer from Auburn's national championship team. Problem is he's had some serious off field issues. I present to you a simple question, would you be excited or upset if UConn told him he could play here this upcoming season? If he gets his off field issues straightened out a backfield of McCombs and Dyer is SCARY.

Personally, no way... Why do you think he's still "searching"?

Other's will present the win @ all cost argument.

No way. I want UCONN football to succeed as much as the next fan but not at the expense of taking in an Urban Meyer-esque thug with a history of drug and gun charges. Any excitement that I'd get from UCONN winning with a Dyer type of player on the team would be quickly sapped on the day that he gets arrested ala Aaron Hernandez.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2013/07/07/auburn-arkansas-baptist-michael-dyer/2496913/ "I'm only gonna go to school, make good grades and play football," he said. "I don't bring anything with me. No registered gun, and I'm not gonna waste your time smoking marijuana. I want to put a jersey on, sweat and play football. I want to show people the true Michael Dyer." I believe in chances because I believe people do change. All dyer did was smoke weed and was caught carrying a "registered" (legally able to carry a firearm) pistol. So, yea I wouldn't have an issue with us giving Dyer another chance to showcase his talents. He was MVP in the 2011 BCS championship game, so he's worth taking a chance. I guys can remember McCombs failed a drug test before as well and he's still here, might I add he also put his hands on his girl... just saying.

I'd also give the kid a chance to succeed at UConn but with a zero-tolerance policy. First missed meeting/class or slightest off-field issue and he's gone. I'd hate to see where Caron might have ended up if JC hadn't given him a chance to prove himself and mature.

Major distraction. Totally neg for team morale. We could possibly use him and I hope he gets a chance with someone. Just not here. Our guys seem to be exuding some confidence right now and I'm OK with seeing how that plays out and letting the guys that have paid some dues prove themselves.

Major distraction? I respect your opinion Jimdish, however, I don't believe this would cause any distraction to the team. Dyer is a big name in the college football world, and with that said the Uconn players would give two craps about Dyers history, I'm sure they will welcome a star player like Dyer with no problem. In addition to that, I think it would boost the players confidence even more.

I feel like these are the kinds of people we need to take chances on as we look to prove ourselves being serious about playing "big boy" football. A commitment to Michael Dyer (or a player of similar caliber with similar off field issues) shows that this school is willing to take chances to become a bigger football school. I think if we were to for instance claim Dyer, and then hire a bigger named coach after the PP era (Petrino? although he had a little scandal of his own) those would be big moves to show we are serious about football. A player of Dyer's caliber puts butts in the seats.

Well said. I'd only add the zero-tolerance clause I mention above. We do that and I say give this kid a helmet and a chance.

Exactly, Dyer was an impact player in the SEC, imagine in the AAC what he would be able to do. To bad Uconn won't take the chance with Dyer

Smart. This responsible, young man knows not to carry a registered weapon.
Way too easy for police to trace.

Sign him up, impose some structure and make him a success on and off the field.

Not worth it. If he screwed up again it'd be just another softball tossed the way of major media outlets for them to destroy UConn athletics. If anyone read the article in ESPN the Magazine about Auburn and it's drug problems and the 4 kids busted for robbing someone (couldn't find link to story, sorry), Dyer was mentioned multiple times and he's not the type of kid I'd want our program taking in. He's had multiple chances to prove himself and has failed each time. I believe he screwed up at Arkansas St when Malzahan took him.

completely agree about the zero tolerance policy. its sometimes tough to keep in mind that these kids are 18,19,20 etc years old and often come from rough backgrounds. Sometimes it takes a kick or two in the butt to get them going in the right direction.

I actually see wherever he lands benefitting exposure wise from him being there. There will be the initial stories about him wherever he lands but once the season starts as long as he stays out of trouble people will be writing about 150 yard rushing games not drug charges. UConn football has already taken a major PR hit, this is the sort of low risk, high reward a program like UConn can take but more established programs (ND, NEB, etc) can't/won't

I'm generally against taking chances on thugs. But if what's in that USA Today article is the whole thing? I can get past it. Zero tolerance obviously.

We should at least talk to him. If he is interested.

There's the key. Look I'm all about giving people a chance to redeem themselves but this kid is going on his 4th chance. Odds are he'll not be able stay out of trouble seeing how he's not been able to previously.

That type of PR hit is one UConn doesn't need at all. It's not worth the risk IMHO.

Dyer could easily end up at SMU or Cincinnati and then the Coach P haters would bemoan him for not jumping at the chance. On the other hand if Pasqualoni did go for Dyer the anti-gun crowd in this state would try and lynch him.

I say have P talk to the guy. If P seems to think this kid can work at UConn then go for it. The program needs wins and exposure THIS YEAR if it wants to survive. UConn has had more than it's share of crappy luck the last couple years so maybe it's time to stack the deck in our favor.

We need someone to replace Nick Williams as a returner and bolster the running game. maybe this guy fits those needs. He breaks one loose and scores on the opening kick off against Maryland and the detractors in here will be going"Gun? What gun?" Or "Hey everyone is smoking pot these days and it's going to be legal soon anyways".
