I was hoping he'd decide to stay. Oh well, I wish the kid well.

This transfer just makes no sense. I understand his grandma is sick, but WKU is no where near Tennessee. We have all the playing time in the world available and are a major program compared to WKU. If he is worried about having to be at Uconn all summer, why can't they just let the kid take the summer term off and come back for the fall.

What the hell? I thought he was leaning towards returning? It just baffles me that a kid who has reshirted here, learned the ins and outs of the offense, won a national championship, and even paid his own way for a semester, now wouldn't want to stick around and play major minutes for a major program. This is a golden opportunity for the kid.

It just blows my mind that we literally have ONE big man on this roster who has played a lick. How can a raw, athletic kid like Hayes not sign here when Calhoun has a history of developing big men, there is loads of playing time available, and he has a opportunity to play at one of the best programs in the country? It's just baffling.

First off, WKU is three hours from Chattanooga.

Secondly, UConn has a coach who has yet to publicly announce his return and who is 69 years old. And as of now, they won't be in the tournament next year.

It's not easy to recruit a kid to come to or stay at UConn right now.

It is simply the uncertainty of who is going to coach. Even if Calhoun decides to stay, recruits know there will be a coaching change at some point during their four years. If they have other high major programs interested in them it is easy to rule out UConn. If I were Hayes, I would go to Georgetown and not think twice about it.

That sums it up. Uconn name is not strong enough for some recruits with all the below issues. Do not forget blaney running his mouth

I simply don't understand what Calhoun is doing, he has to know this is hurting the program. There is no way we are getting any recruit of real value for next season the way things are right now. I love JC but make you're decision and state exactly whether you are looking to retire or stay and if you are staying how long. The constant will he or won't he coach is absolutely killing us, don't understand how the man who created this program could let this happen.

Could it be that Calhoun's ego is finally catching up with us? That quality, manifest as toughness and an us-against-the-world attitude has done great things for our program. But now we're seeing the negative side of that same quality.

I think that's certainly a part of it. He is a fighter and what the NCAA is doing to us has to be eating away at him, without a doubt e feels he has earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants which is true to a point, I just fear he feels he's also earned the right to name his successor. Calhoun built this and deserves the right to go out on his terms but he's wrong if he thinks it's totally his decision to decide who takes over. Calhoun has alluded to wanting our program to stay in house but the fact remains that he doesn't have a very qualified coaching tree. I just worry we could be missing out on Shaka Smart if Calhoun keeps trying to push Ollie as our next coach behind the scenes, I love KO but if it's a choice between the two picking Shaka Smart should be a no brainer. I know it's speculating but it makes a hell of a lot of sense that Shaka Smart would have serious interest in being UConn's coach.

i don't even know what to make of it. I guess just try to stay centered and wait till we know more. as a fan it's frustrating with the seemingly constant barrage of negative press, lack of a cohesive message coming from the staff, and worry that we will have a competitive team next year.

but bottom line, nothing we as fans can do except support the team when the time comes. but i'm with the people who are kind of baffled he's transferring.

The worst thing about all this is that somewhere Dan Wetzel and his ilk are reading these threads and whacking to them.

Can you blame him? Taking everything else out of the equation, he will have at least two years of eligibility left after next season... Do you really think that we won't bring in someone better the following year when we will have a ton of schoolyard hips to give out and Tyler is a senior? Staying just because of PT in 2012-13 isn't the best reason...

Doesn't anybody think that Bradley was given no choice but to pay his own way, and just decided to stick it out til the end of the year to get out of dodge? Seems pretty logical considering he was given an offer he couldn't refuse when Drummond came on board. I'd want to transfer too if I was submarined. I don't know why the surprise?

has anyone seen michael bradley play? is he any good? maybe he realized that the big east isnt for him and that his skills are better suited for a smaller conference closer to home. i mean, most people felt that way from day 1.

I don't think it is true to any point. He gets to go out on his own terms because he has earned that but he hasn't earned holding the program hostage while he ponders his decision. He needs to make up his mind soon or have the AD make it for him.
You make good points about Ollie. Perhaps JC is delaying in the hope that Smart and others are out of the picture so Ollie becomes his successor.

Odd, when he came to UCONN he was high on us because he was going to major in Pharmacy and we have a great program. WKU doesn't have a Pharmacy School. I guess the major thing really wasn't important?

this was one of my questions as well, but when you lose Oriakhi, Smith and Bradley, and your post now consists of Olander and Wolf, with no one else, there's simply no depth. no matter how bad he may have been (and i'm not saying he was bad), he is 6'10" and you can't teach height or athleticism, and he apparently had both...

Yes I did. My interest is in his interests in pharmacy.

First off, it's well known that he switched majors to Economics early in the year.

Secondly, he is transferring because of his grandmother and NCAA ban.

You shouldn't hold a kid to something he said as a 17 year old high school senior.

I understand UConn's program is not in a stable place right now. But I'm not expecting a Nerlens Noel to sign here with a tournament ban looming, I'm looking at the guys like Hayes who are raw and underdeveloped. Even if Calhoun may only coach one or two years, you'd think a kid like him would jump at the chance to play under a HOF coach for a year or two and then with an NBA veteran or another proven coach for another year or two. He'll have every opportunity to prove himself if he comes here, whereas at other programs he'll be fighting for playing time and likely be sitting on the bench temporarily as he develops.
