When Donald Brown was drafted by the Colts, very shortly after finding out he was going to be a Colt, he received a congratulatory note from then QB Peyton Manning via text message.
In the days, then weeks and then months of the offseason that followed - a random text would show up here or there to Donald, from Peyton. Sometimes, usually very early in the morning - asking how Donald's workout was that day. What was he up to? THey became friends and teammates, even though there is that youtube video of Peyton cussing Donald out on the field for screwing up his blocking assignment.
Peyton Manning - didn't only send messages to Donald after the draft that year.
Peyton Manning isn't the only guy that has ever been a leader on the football field, or in life. Leaders on the field and life don't need to be the QB, or the top guy, but can be anyone in the group, within their sphere of influence and smaller group within the larger.
But the successful ones, whatever their field, or position within a group are - they all have the same kinds of habits of finding ways to make people they work with on a daily basis - get better and work harder.
In today's world, when everybody's got a phone, there is plenty of ways for teammates to stay together, and positively reinforce each other for success.
