Game just got underway and I can already tell it's going to be a long season for Memphis. Nichols and Goodwin are good but they have absolutely nothing in the backcourt. Can't believe Pastner would assemble a team this weak at the guard positions.

13-10 toward end of first half. Good game. I expect more touchdowns in second half. Go AAC football!

VanVleet is one of my favorite guards in college... Reminds me of a quicker deron williams when he was in college

On pace for 24 TOs and to not break 50

also just a very poor shooting night. I dunno how Goodwin has taken 1 attempt so far. He should be dominating, but he's getting dominated by WSU's one forward.

I am not sure if there is a coach in the whole country that does less with more better then JP.

Tom Crean

Mark Few, Gottfried, Steve Lavin and Rick Barnes should be in the conversation too

Miller gets a pass for one more year because of injuries last season

I honestly don't know how the Memphis guards will bring the ball up the court against Boat, he should absolutely feast against them.

I agree and it could get scary this year because he doesn't have close to the talent he did in the past.

Is Memphis a tournament team this year? They look terrible.

That was the thought heading into the year, but they really have looked awful so far. Nothing from the guards today, limited ball movement and assists. They have a good frontcourt of Nichols/Goodwin, but as shown today, when Goodwin gets in foul trouble early they're in big trouble. Goodwin ended up w 4 pts today. Can't win with that out of him.

With their backcourt being so thin, you wonder what the hell happened to Kuran Iverson and I looked up his stat line today to see that he stuffed the stat sheet...0-0 FG with 2 TOs

I think they'll end up as a bubble team. However, getting blown out by Carelton twice (Canadian school) this summer coupled with the loss to a bad DII team Christian Brothers last week isn't how you want to start a season!

Don't know where you saw this imaginary stat line for Iverson since he has a concussion and didn't even make the trip to South Dakota.

I saw him play several times at the high school level and never understood his ranking. He played well against kids half his size and didn't even look dominate. He appeared severely overrated when I watched him.

Sean Miller has no business being in the conversation. None.

Completely agree with Gottfried, Lavin and Barnes.
I said he gets one more pass because of injuries last year, but when you get multiple top recruiting classes and can't get to a FF, that's underachieving. Much more has been done by much less with other coaches.

Jim Calhoun had similarly good classes in the 1990s and lost in the Elite Eight multiple times. Arizona has lost very close games in the tourney to strong teams.

The only reason Sean Miller doesn't have a (likely) National Championship is UCONN (and Kemba).

And the only reason Cal doesn't have 3 from the last 4 years is because of UConn. Does that make him a good coach?

JC has gone on to win 3 NCs. Miller has yet to get to a Final Four. If/when he does, the conversation changes. I'm sure people were starting to question JC's use of talent before 99, and could you have blamed them?

Yeah. Whether we like it or not, Cal is a pretty good coach....He's 1) a game coach, 2) a solid-to-good developer (look at his UMass and Memphis teams...he hasn't kept a lot of UK players, and those he has haven't developed as well as others in the past), and 3) perhaps the best recruiter ever. That makes him a good coach.

Compare that with Rick Barnes, who's a terrible game coach, a poor developer, and a good recruiter.

The results: Calipari has 1 title, 5 Final Fours; Barnes has 1 Final Four.

We can criticize him for weak game coaching, but in college basketball that's only about a third of job, and he's pretty darn good at the others.

In the 2011 Elite Eight, Arizona had a wide open corner 3 with time winding down. If that shot goes in, Arizona goes to the Final Four and Uconn goes home. So you're saying Sean Miller would instantly be a better coach if his player had made that shot?

It's hard to make it to the Final Four. Sean Miller will absolutely get there. He's a really good coach.
