For many years WDVE, a radio station in Pittsburgh that plays rock music ,had a Memorial Day tradition of playing the top 500 as voted by fans. The winner for many years was Stairway to Heaven. This year, after a twenty year hiatus, they brought back the contest. In a huge upset, Another Brick in the Wall took the top spot. There is a list on their site if you are interested. It clearly shows the age demographic of their listener base. Some of the favorites mentioned here on BY appear on the list. Others are way down the line, or not there at all! If you have time, check it out. Especially you music aficionados. :D

Demographics! It is all about demographics!
It no doubt is, but I find it very weird. The Who, Led Zep and the Stones were the iconic groups that were very popular with my frat brothers who were just a tad older (and liked "older" music), this was in the mid '70's. So much from those groups. Meanwhile, Pink Floyd and Queen were not even imagined yet.

I owe much of my early music introduction to these folks - they also liked Bad Company, Jethro Tull, CSN&Y, and some others. While I was in school, saw the growing popularity of Billy Joel and Boston, among many others.

When I was stationed near Pittsburgh in '64-65, KDKA and/or WAMO (Porky Chedwick and Sir Walter) were almost always playing in the barracks. Don't believe I heard any of the songs on the list at that time. The Beatles and James Brown playing simultaneously was a bit much.

Was Stairway to Heaven ripped off? Sounds like Paige "borrowed" the key and maybe a progression or two, but to me it's not sufficiently similar. Composers borrow. It is what it is, but this is not a case of Ray Parker Jr. and Huey Lewis, where Ghostbusters was virtually the same as I Want a New Drug, except for the underlying tempo.

The original composer of Taurus passed in 1997, but had 26 years to file suit. From 30,000 feet, I feel the owner of the song's rights is taking on the characteristics of a patent troll.

Court agrees to listen to Led Zeppelin in 'Stairway' appeal

Separate link...
This guitar instrumental is famous for its association with the Led Zeppelin song "Stairway To Heaven." The beginning of the Led Zeppelin song contains many musical elements found in "Taurus," which was released three years earlier.
When Led Zeppelin toured the US for the first time in 1968, it was with Spirit and Vanilla Fudge. "Taurus" was part of Spirit's set, and Jimmy Page likely heard the song at some point - he admitted to owning the album.
"Taurus" was written by the group's guitarist, Randy California (birth name: Randy Wolfe), so he is the only member who could make a claim against Led Zeppelin, but he never did. California died in 1997 at age 45 when he drowned in Hawaii, but in 2009, Michael Skidmore, described by the New York Times as a "customs consultant and former music journalist," came into control of California's trust, and in 2014 filed a lawsuit against Led Zeppelin. The case went to trial, and in 2016 Jimmy Page took the stand, testifying that he never heard the song "Taurus."

Funny how things go, I've heard all those songs so often I literally don't need to hear them again, except mebbe Gimme Shelter. I have Sirius and I never find myself choosing Rewind or Vinyl.

I know you were asking Waquoit but I like Classic Vinyl and Rewind. The other favs I have on Sirius are 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, Beatles and the Bridge. What do other people enjoy? On a longer drive I still enjoy listening to a favorite album.

I feel strongly both ways about Led Zeppelin. I have a lot of respect for them, but in many ways none at all. (I also love a bunch of their music and can't stand some of it.)

Thing is, they/Jimmy Page have lost so many plagiarism suits that they've made themselves an easy target (I'm not sure how many it is, but I'm not sure you can count them on one hand). In some of the cases decided against them, it seemed to me that they lifted quite a bit less than in Stairway.

I don't agree with a lot of the songs, but I like this list, too, in that it's really wide-ranging, and I also agree with the bands that are represented.

I guess my top 5 music listens these days are Underground Garage, 40's Junction, Studio 54, Watercolors and 70's. With Blues and Bluegrass mixed in. I still like to go to classic rock concerts and all but I just don't listen much to it these days by choice.
