Mechelle Voepel: Crowded field for coach of the year

I am little surprised that there is no coach from ND on the list anywhere. But I am happy to see Doug on there - what he is doing this year is pretty amazing and I got to believe he gets strong consideration as BE COY

If UCONN were 28-0 and ranked number one in the nation there would be no question that Geno would win. Maybe having Griner puts Mulkey out of the running? Which would be odd since EDD is the apparent POY.

All said tongue in cheek...

You make it sound as if he is putting a bunch of ragamuffins on the court each night.

Crowley is the leading vote-getter by far. It is a nice story, akin to Nebraska previously.

Sorry, Martin does not belong. Sure, it is a challenge to blend an uber talent with role players. But I have seen 2 entire games in person and have not seen a single screen set for Elena. The reason that Delaware is 25-1 is simply EDD. In her conference, she is a woman among girls.

Geno puts out a bunch of talented kids, but they are winning by large margins and are not far from 28-0. If, the year after Griner leaves, Kim can get to 25-3 with only narrow losses and an average margin of victory of 30+, she'll get my vote.

Tara is having a nice year with perhaps less talent and certainly fewer experienced kids than Muffet has. Plus, I think she deserves credit for developing her kids, especially the fabulous Nneka.

Pretty sure UCMiami is referring to the fact that Doug only has seven players available due to injuries. And those seven are doing a fine job, but wow...talk about a thin bench!

Yes, other than the three losses, UCONN is almost undefeated.

With that logic Geno should not have won the AP coach of the year award in 2009 or 2011, with the player that most on this board consider the greatest women's college basketball player of all time in Maya Moore, and Tina Charles (2009), who most on this board consider the greatest post player of all time.

As some have pointed out here, it's not easy going undefeated this deep into the season. Many posters here also say that Baylor has a number of flaws, but Mulkey has apparently been able to mask those flaws well enough to be undefeated at this point.

I misread the previous comment. I thought UCMiami was talking about Geno. OOPS! Never mind...

I understand the love for Crowely -- but, his schedule hasn't been as challenge as Temple's (and yes, I know they beat Temple.)

Always a hard question to pin down, this COY thing -- me, I like the idea of expanding the pool and having discussions BEFORE the process -- like the inclusion of the "Deserving Mention" - would add Wiggins Fresno State, Geckler Howard (yes, that Georgetown Geckler) and MTSU (not because they haven't been good - but they've succeeded the season after a dealing with a murdered teammate).

Bruno, Geno ... they both end in 'NO!'

I say eliminate all COY awards until after the season is over, then give the award to the coach of the champion.

Worst Idea of the Week.

It sorta works that way, anyway, but what's the point if that's always the case?

If Baylor goes undefeated Kim Mulkey is the winner. You don't penalize a coach because she wins with terrific players. Muffet McGraw belongs on the list and is COY if ND wins NCAA Championship

Isn't it true the COY is given before the NCAA?

It's interesting to consider what might the COY criteria be?
Rate the quality of talent you have.
Rate the quality of financial and other support you have.
Consider the pluses and minuses from the previous year.
Consider extenuating circumstances (Oklahoma State, Tn, MTSU).
Consider (?) pre-season, conference ratings.
Look at total wins in conference and out of conference.
Measure win/loss victory quotient as compared to others team's margin.

Or, whoever wins the championship, regardless of regular season, is the COY.

It's why I think the reg. season winner should get the NCAA bid. Conference champeen gets a looksee to pop other bubble teams.

I have to say that I don't think anyone has done a better job as a coach (teaching and coaching in game time situations as well as recruiting) than Scott Rueck of Oregon State. I have no connection to Oregon State and don't root for them, but what he has done in the situation he took on is amazing.

Like I said, regardless of what gives Griner the defensive edge, she still has a HUGE edge on defense. All the moves in the world can change that. She is simply the biggest defensive force in college basketball, probably ever.

Nice article about Scott and Oregon State
