as mentioned in the NY Times article this morning, UConn is an incredible 17-3 in games of #1 vs. #2 stretching back 20 years ago and 21 seasons. They are 12-2 as #1 and 5-1 as #2, with the only losses being to UTenn and ND in the 1999 and 2001 Tourney games as #1 and to Baylor in Dec. 2011 as #2.

Usually you would expect closer to 50-50, and certainly not 5-1 as a #2. The big Dogs especially get up for the big games, and also most of the small ones.

I'm surprised that's the first time it was brought to our attention, that is one pretty incredible statistic.

To tell the truth, I think that because UConn has been the #1 team so often during the 2000s when they have played a dominant role, a lot of fans would think that they'd be expected to have that record, even though it does go all the way back to the game on Jan. 16 1995 when UConn was a #2 against UTenn. And in recent years, UConn was a prohibitive favorite when up against some #2 ACC team that got the ranking because someone had to have it.

To add to the awe and shock of it, UConn's wins as a #2 in these games have come by and average of 10.4 margin, while the loss to Baylor was by 5. Since the last time UConn lost as a #1 to a #2 in the 2001 FF, UConn has gone 10-0 in the matchups and won by an average margin of 16.3. So maybe it does now seem like just standard stuff now.
