Former first-round pick Matt Barnes threw 21⁄3 scoreless innings, striking out one batter on a 96-mph heater. Barnes has now thrown seven scoreless innings in Florida, with eight strikeouts and only one walk.
Farrell said the next step is to get three innings out of Barnes.
“Depending on who wins that spot in the rotation, we know that there’s going to be the need for a multi-inning guy,” Farrell said. “Without stretching him out, we’re probably not being fair to him. He’s a guy that’s obviously started, been able to go multiple innings. He’s in that mix for what that final bullpen spot would be, if it’s Steven Wright, if it’s Elias, whoever it may be, we need another multi-inning guy.”
