You say “lots”. Give me specific instances and name the locations of local tennis courts being torn down and converted to pickleball courts. Now I’m not arguing that in some cases there might be some private conversions of tennis to pickleball, or a town that has a zillion tennis courts converting a small percentage to pickleball, but when you say “lots”, I think you’re exaggerating. The reason for the conversions is simple, pickleball is much much easier to play and to play it well, tennis is not easy to play and play well, in most individual cases it takes years of practice, lessons, and coaching to play tennis and play it well. The same thing happened in the United States in the 1980’s with paddleball, although I will say that paddleball is still very big in Europe and South America, and I might add that Pickelball is not new, it’s been around since the 1960’s, and is very different than both paddleball and tennis. Pickelball uses a lightweight plastic wiffleball with holes in it, making it more like badminton. Whereas I’ve seen paddleball players using a tennis ball. Lastly I have seen people in the local town I live in using tennis courts to play pickleball, all that’s needed is a few different colored lines to define the much smaller pickleball court dimensions. The next thing you’ll tell me is pickleball is overtaking golf too.
