Despite the end result, the game today was in no way bad. Somewhat bizarrely for a loss, there were only 3 statistics that were better for MD than UConn (OK, 4 if you count the end score). One was turnovers, a miserable -17 for the Huskies that included a -10 on steals. Another was shots taken, which was -13 for the Huskies . Lastly, 3FG made, which was -9. Everything else: FGM(+1), FG%(+1.1%), FT%(+5.4%), ORB(+3), DRB(an astounding +19), Fouls(+2), Asst(+19), was in the Huskies' favor. This is good for a team that had the end of the bench playing 42 minutes. If the bigs had listened to the coaches about not jumping to attempt blocking a shot on a closeout, I believe they'd have won the game. They played good defense and ran the plays when they didn't turn over the ball.
Color my expectations for the season raised.
A point of interest regarding the cumulative stats on the NCAA site: if you go to the UConn Schedule And Results page today, the season totals won't match what the per-40 spreadsheet shows. This is because the NCAA site apparently updates the cumulative stats in a batch process at the end of the day. Their stats don't include the Maryland game as of 8:25PM Eastern time today.
On to the Huskies' active per-40 leaders:
Note that inactive Azzi and Dorka are omitted. Nika will drop out after next Sunday if still not plaaying.
Points: Lou 23.28, Aaliyah 19.32, Aubrey 17.65
FT: Aaliyah 3.24, Lou and Ayanna tied ~2.82, Aubrey 2.69
ORB: Ayanna 4.56, Aubrey 3.53, Aaliyah 3.11
DRB: Aaliyah 8.65, Ayanna and Aubrey tied 6.27, Caroline 5.41
TRB: Aaliyah 11.76, Ayanna 10.88, Aubrey 9.75
Fouls: Aubrey 2,18, Nika 2.38, Lou & Caroline tied ~3.00
Asst: Nika 11.60, Ines 5.33, Ayanna 3.51
TO: Ayanna 2.46, Aubrey 2.86, Lou 2.99
Blocks: Amari 2.86, Ayanna 1.75, Aaliyah 1.49
