Malzahn says UConn officials have not asked him to speak with Rhett Lashlee
>>If Rhett Lashlee is a target for the open Connecticut head coaching position, his boss says he wouldn’t know yet. Upon Auburn’s arrival Tuesday in New Orleans for the 2017 Sugar Bowl, Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said “I don’t know” when asked if Connecticut officials have asked for permission to speak with Lashlee. “Nobody has said anything to me,” Malzahn said.<<

>>NEW ORLEANS — Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee has been described as an intriguing candidate for UConn's opening for a head coach. The question is whether Lashlee, 33, has been contacted about the job as his name gains attention from local newspapers in Hartford, Conn., and from national reporters such as FOX Sports' Bruce Feldman. Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn seems to be in the dark as well about his protege, who played quarterback for him at Shiloh Christian, a private high school in Northwest Arkansas, in the late 1990s and early 2000s. "I don’t know," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "Nobody’s said anything to me."
UConn fired Bob Diaco after three seasons Monday. What makes the prospect of Lashlee interesting is his connection to UConn athletics director David Benedict, who previously served as Auburn's chief financial officer.
Auburn is 8-2 with Lashlee calling plays. He called one game in 2015 and was handed the play-calling duties from Malzahn prior to an 18-13 win against LSU. The Tigers went on to win six straight games and position themselves for the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
No. 14 Auburn (8-4) faces No. 7 Oklahoma (10-2) on Jan. 2 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Auburn arrived on site Tuesday.<<
