Hats off to Mahaney today.

15 points in just 20 minutes and he looked like the creative inside/outside player we saw when he was a stud at Saint Mary's. Today's three-guard lineup of Diarra/Mahaney/Ball/Karaban/Reed was my favorite of the night and I'd like to see more of that as long as McNeeley is out.

He was so good today. The three he hit in the first half from the wing was a beauty. He had just enough space to get his shot off quickly and after he caught the ball he hastily, and very confidently shot it — he knew it was in as soon as it left his hand. His d is getting much better. And so is his handle ! Pierre killed him a few times in the 2nd half , but he killed everyone today.

Last couple of games I’ve seen determination and less hesitation from him. Noticed Hurley and Aidan’s teammates going crazy with him on the bench. Maybe he’s always been a low key personality person but I think he’s getting used to the intensity of UConn, the BE and our schedule.
We all know the drawbacks, size, physicality and speed but he does have BBIQ. Just mix together some Cam guts and he can get this job done.
And today was the LAST time he will have difficulty beating the 10 second line. Anyway this I hope is a mental boost for him, so much of this game is in the head.

He had a number of possessions on D where he left everything out there on the floor to stay in front of his man. Just all effort even when he’s not as quick or big as the guys he’s guarding. He’s never going to be castle out there but loved seeing him really bought in on that end.

He is tough and he is scrappy. He has hung in there. The matchup game is never going to favor him but with McNeeley out we need the Mahaney that we saw today.

And the charge he took from Mela ...

The Diarra/Ball/Mahaney line up worked because pc was going small.

This same lineup should be able to work against Nova on Wednesday.
Lot smaller than Uconn had with last year’s 3 guard lineup that included 6’5 Newton & 6’7 Castle.
Worked today but I’d rather see just 2 of Diarra, Ball & Mahaney on the floor at the same time. It’s why I think J Ross is key while McNeeley’s out. We need him to step up on both defense & offense. He shows flashes, but like Hurley said, Ross just needs to have a breakout game. I sure hope we see it during this January stretch.

His confidence is emerging, which is awesome. His shot fake 3 with a couple dribbles and floater that he hit today should be bread and butter for him, but he was missing that shot over and over early in the season. So happy for him to see it starting to click.

There is still another level to his game. He keeps passing up opportunities to be the man when we need him. He needs to stop passing the ball with 7 secs left on the clock and set his man up to drive to the hoop or create space off the dribble to get off his shot.
