Despite the previous season's record that enabled the Lynx to position themselves to draft Maya Moore in 2011, the Lynx were a very talented team that immediately became a championship contender when they added Moore who proved herself more than ready for the next level. Keeping the core of Moore, Augustus, Brunson, and Whalen together has enabled the Lynx to remain perennial contenders. Still, it surprises me that they have not been overtaken; Age, personnel turnover, teams getting better. Phoenix had the championship season and seem, now, permanently stuck as the third best team in the WNBA. New York has the anchor to be a contender, but needs better personnel around that anchor, Atlanta with McCaughtry's return might make some noise. Washington around Della Donne does not scare the better teams. Seattle is impossible to figure out; Stewart, Bird, Loyd. a nice core trio. Match them up with Minnesota's core 4 and I would be inclined to take Seattle, yet Minnesota has won that matchup 7 straight times. Basketball being a game of matchups, the difference for Minnesota is the incomparable Maya Moore; Great player, great competitor who has improved tremendously in the two areas that concerned me seven years ago - Defense and ball handling. And, for the third consecutive year, the Lynx will be making at least two appearances in Washington DC. The tickets have already been ordered.
