I was surprised this wasn't mentioned earlier, or maybe it was and I missed it. Saw that he got into a fight during a pick-up basketball game. I don't know the details, but if I'm not mistaken he got involved in an altercation last year as well, he had to sit out a quarter or something. Sounds like a recurring problem, I wonder how Coach Diaco handles this one, since it will be his first time dealing with an issue to one of the players.

It was and it was deleted probably because nobody had any facts.

From the Daily Campus:

"McCombs was playing basketball when he became tangled up with another student. According to witnesses Chris Ambrose and Matt Zampini, a campus correspondent for The Daily Campus, McCombs allegedly attacked the other student, punching and slapping him in the face. The two then wrestled each other to the ground, according to Zampini."

Some guys just have bad luck. We all know how dangerous a pick up basketball game can be, especially in the UConn recreational facility with all the wannabees and associated low lifes hangn' around just looking to start something in between classes. Not like he has a history or anything.

Lyle gets more 'press' for off the field stuff than he does for on the field.

I kind of feel bad at times for kids these days. I can tell you first hand that in the late 80s early 90s, football players regularly got into fist fights at UCONN, with anyone and everyone, especially at a place called the Upper Deck. It was almost ritual. and if a non-football player got the better of you - not good. that's why the post above got me. men's basketball team used to hang out there too and mix it up. There were no cell phone cameras and internet reports. just the police blotter, if the cops were in a particularly bad mood, and you got caught. I'm not even going to try to go into right or wrong here, just saying. the unfortunate thing for this player, is that over his time at UCONN, he's developed a pattern of getting caught.

I've dealt with kids in the 18-25 year old age group extensively and it's amazing how a group of 5-10 kids could always go out together, do the same things and one of the kids would be the one who always got caught. And there was always one of his pals who always slid out of sight 2 minutes before schhit hit the fan. After a while you just cut the cord.

I don't know the sociological or psychological background or the how/why of the profile. I just know that certain people tend to get caught and taking care of their mess's takes up an inordinate amount of time.

I'm guessing we're around the same age. I remember the Upper Deck fondly. When the lights came on you grabbed whatever chick looked drunk enough and took your chances. The football team had a lot of douches on it back then too. Another one of their battle rings was Thumpers on 195.

Question: When did cops start getting called and the media start reporting on pick-up game shoving matches/fights?

If you've been to Storrs anytime int eh past few years then, you know that back then, the entire region was very much different than it is now. Thumpers was a way off campus, and when things went down there, it wasn't like the Upper Deck or Huskies. More mature crowd there, whatever that means. Things never really went down at Ted's because in my days there, which were probably the same as yours, the bartender/bouncer that ran the place was a bare knuckle fighter that fought for cash in underground rings in the New London, and newly minted Foxwoods casino area. Not a lot of people knew that, but the few times the guy cleared house, it got around that nobody messed around at Teds. But upper deck and huskies, guaranteed fight every weekend. Mostly football players but basketball players too. Different times. In so very many ways. Not just the lack of internet and tweeter and facebook posts and camera phones to document everything......nobody was worried about idiot, wannabe tough guys, carrying guns or knives back then, and didn't have to be.

Different media time but the UConn cops would respond to jaywalkers with guns drawn back then.

After reading Carl and Jimmy's posts, I'm picturing 1980's UConn being a scene from Fight Club, what the hell lol.

Wish I could have read that thread, I could have invited some more Yardies to the tailgate.
This incident has been handled by the Head Coach, I'll leave it like that.
BTW, all Yardies are welcome to the tailgate.

My buddy and I nearly scrapped with a former Husky hardball player and current Mets prospect on the 2:00 am Carriage Exodus a few years back. We were all way drunk and way stupid. Good story if he makes it though.

It's being held in the red lot if anyone is interested.
