Lusia Harris passes

Lusia Harris-Stewart, a major pioneer in womens basketball, passed away today. She was a dominant center for the Delfa State dynasty of the 70s and an Olympian in 1976.

Wow! You hit the nail on the head when you called the great Lusia Harris-Stewart a pioneer of women's basketball. I remember as a kid, early 80s, talking about how great Cheryl Miller was and how she was the baddest female hooper out there. My pops was like "Nope. Cheryl Miller couldn't touch this sista from Minter City, Mississippi named Lusia Harris" Hearing about Mrs. Harris-Stewart in the 80s from folks that followed basketball (men's and women's) and then over the years hearing about her from greats such as the Nancy Liberman-Cline, the late great Pat Summit, and Ann Meyers, we have lost a true pioneer of the women's game.

RIP, Mrs. Lusia Harris-Stewart.

My mom’s youngest brother played basketball at Delta State and graduated as the women’s dynasty was starting. Mom also has a degree from DSU and I likely would have attended there myself if the school had engineering programs. That’s really how I wound up at Mississippi State. Mom and my uncle agreed Lusia was truly a great one.
