When I first starting watching UConn and Big East Basketball in the early 80s, Louie was the Coach at St. John's. His teams were talented, always played hard, and a victory over them was a legit cause for celebration. They won 5 Big East regular season titles fron 1980 to 1992, as well as Big East Tournament titles in 1983 and 1986. He was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992.

He turned 99 on January 5th! Happy Birthday Louie!

One of the best coaches in history at in-game adjustments. Calhoun's press never worked against St. Johns. Louie was not an ace recruiter (blew the recruiting of Hakeem Olajuwon), otherwise he would have won several titles.

How did he blow Akeem's recruitment? Olajuwon hated NYC and cancelled his visit.

He scheduled the visit in January. A July visit would have been the smart move.

Never understood him wearing a sweater for luck forever because it worked maybe once. Did he stop after losses? No. but a good guy.

And Louie didn't have anyone meet Hakeem at the airport. A lot can go wrong when a kid from Nigeria gets off a flight in JFK all by himself. Like the kid getting on the next flight to Houston.

Louie couldn't wear a sweater in July, tho.
