Good read in today's links about the Lubbock Christian program- they are ranked #1 in D2, and their coach credits the 65 point loss at the hands of UCONN earlier this season as a major contributing factor to their current success. It's all about perspective and attitude. Refreshing to read, and wish some of the commentators in WCB would talk about this.

I didn't realize they chartered a plane and and made a whole big deal out of it. Good for them. Compare and contrast with teams that won't play UConn and go into the toilet. And now you only hear about the team when they are whining about people being mean to them.

After seeing the video (thanks Rocky) and reading the Registrar article (thanks Nan) I think the Chaps coach, Steve Gomez, should be in line --a long line I know-- for Geno's job when he retires. Why?
After playing UConn just once, Gomez and his team embraced numerous elements of UConn's system. The players saw it first hand and recognized the answers to a winning season. Not only the hard work, one game at a time, but the grinding for 40 minutes and"it's not about the score it's about the execution for the entire game." Gomez was realistic and identified 6 or 7 specific essentials that are necessary for improvement and success. Do other coaches do that too? Probably. However, the Lady Chaps put it into play immediately and have the proven results to show for it. I'm impressed.

What a great video - well produced, and showing a lot of joy in just playing the game of basketball. The story by Carl is very good as well.

And this is a perfect answer to those who question why D1 schools who have no chance against Uconn (or ND, or SC or ...) should still consider adding that kind of game to their schedule. It doesn't have to be every year, but if the coach and players approach the game properly, and then take the experience into their practices and their future games it can be a great 'learning experience ' (nod to JPM!)

Here is a link to Steve Gomez's bio:

He seems like a good guy, but to go to a program with the tradition and brand equity of UConn is rather a stretch. Yes, Geno himself was responsible for establishing that tradition and brand equity since he arrived in 1985, but to take the helm at a a program that already carries with it the burden UConn does- well, that's asking a lot. Steve Gomez only has high school coaching experience. And he must be 50 years old already.

Thanks to RockyMTblue2 for finding such a great video! That's the way to approach any game, whether your Lubbock Christian or UCONN or ND, SoCar, or any High School or Middle School !
It's what sports should be all about!

The ripple effect of UConn's success throughout WBB continues to change not just organizations, but in positively altering the lives of individual women across the nation. A very inspiring video.

Reminds me of the attitude seen at Colgate as well - hasn't led to quite so much success as they are 2-5 in their conference play, but they had the same type of joy in the experience and the celebration of basketball.

this is why these games are played, "good for the game"... I recall someone saying "what can you learn from getting your "ass handed to you" by 65 points

welp, this is it (in my Michael Jackson voice)!

Wow! That is simply a wonderfully inspirational, feel-good story. I will be following Lubbock Christian online and rooting for their continued success.

I know UConn tries to schedule lots of top-ranked teams for their early, out-of-conference schedule, but I would be proud for our kids to play that wonderful bunch from LCU, anytime. Particularly if we're already in their neighborhood, on those long trips to Houston, SMU or Tulsa.

It would be one more opportunity for UConn to contribute in a very meaningful way, both to a great Lubbock Christian program and to help grow interest in WCBB.

-LCU WBB, current record stands at 16-0. Well done, Lubbock.

Unlikely Uconn would play a DII team in mid-conference season, but ... when we play Baylor (likely pre conference season as Baylor does not like to play OOC after Jan 1) it might make sense - still more likely that we find a TX D1 program to combine the Baylor game with. And with the TX AAC teams keeping a Uconn presence in TX, the OOC is more likely to aim for other geographies.

I've been out of touch for a bit w the BY. My XL seats are/were right in with the entire Lubbock Christian contingent that chartered their own 737 or 707. They were the greatest group you could ever meet. Excited, upbeat , fun and they were realists. And you could see how disciplined, determined and well coached they were right from the start. And their effort never waivered. This video is one of the greatest tributes, and 3rd party tributes to boot, to our program ever- IMO. What a classy coach, team & program!
