in their hometown.

Remember there was discussion a couple of years ago after Walz put up a L'ville wbb billboard in Mercedes Russel's hometown while recruiting her. Walz, obviously a fan of billboards, has put up personal billboards in the hometowns of each of his 5 new recruits thanking them for signing with Louisville. The billboards will stay up until midnight tonight. Maybe Geno can send his recruits a miniature billboard.

Billboard plus sound thrashing in Final Four or NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Trophy - your choice.

I'd be embarrassed if my team did something like this. Louisville must have too much money in its athletic department if it condones spending on billboards to say thank you to women's basketball recruits. Talk about excesses in college sports. Walz is like a used car salesman.

This is going to set a very bad precedent for certain coaches.... (Think Coach P.)

Louisville generates alot more revenue in terms of athletics than Duke does...... Perhaps the coaches at Ohio State and Texas are pondering billboards in the future.

Might swell the kids' heads... when they visit home.. . OR it might remind the locals where there kids are playing and build attendance/encourage local papers to write stories. That's good for wbb.

Have it on good intel that when Geno visits new recruits he seeks out the regions most notable restaurants, thereby spreading goodwill and supporting local economies. Billboards are for ambulance chasers and other bottom-feeders!

Won't be long before we read Louisville thanks new recruits by giving them BMWs.

This is cheesey and reeks of sleezey at best. They must have a doner that owns a nationl billboard company. These do not come cheep. It is a gotta have a gimmick world, I get that but this is Barnum & Baily.
Having said that I am glad and also proud that The University of Connecticut thanks their recruits by giving them the privelege of wearing a uniform thats says UCONN across the front.

Yeah, probably. It will be part of the new signing bonus allowed under the new P5 pay-for-play rules. ;)

Yeesh. Its a little better than jamming pink flamingoes into a recruits lawn, tho.

I think they decided too wait until a player signs a LOI. Instead of posting a billboard trying too get a recruit LOL.

My sources tell me that UConn considered billboards but used the money to build a basketball training center instead.

Walz addressed the billboards in the post-game presser yesterday. They are electronic billboards and not that expensive to have an image up there for a couple of days.

“Yeah, it is just something that I talked to my staff about, talked to my marketing people about; it is something that I wanted to do. You know it’s not all that expensive, which people don’t understand. You get them on a digital billboard; you are not paying an expense of having the billboard printed. It is a PDF file - it is real simple and the great thing about them is that you can dictate when you want them up. It’s real easy. So, it is very inexpensive way to say a big thank you because our kids loved it, just saying thanks with their picture up in their uniform, and like you said, it gets out there on the internet on a national stage. Sometimes when it comes to recruiting, you try to think outside the box and we had signed them already, so it wasn’t anything we were doing to try and get kids, it was just a simple way to say thanks and I think they all really appreciated it.”

I've said it before, but I like Walz and kind of appreciate that he does a lot for women's basketball. A billboard is a great way to recognize those kids, get people talking. Maybe someone will see it and tune in to a Louisville game next year to see a hometown kid. We're UConn fans and have a different mentality, but I think it's great that someone is thinking outside the box and promoting women's bball at the same time.
