I believe the WNBA has instituted a new rule that penalizes (suspends) players whose oversea play causes them to miss the beginning of the WNBA season. A bad idea, in my humble opinion but, there it is.
Lou is back in California. Not sure if she plays in Tuesday's game at the Crypt vs Minnesota.
The suspension is a technicality and not a punishment, for this year. Next year is different.
Lou was suspended (Temporary) at beginning of the season to free a roster spot until her obligations overseas end.
I cannot find anything regarding a suspension beyond that.
The new CBA allows teams to fine players for every preseason game ($1,000) a player misses, and if they miss the first game of the season they are suspended for the entire season. But that rule applies only after the first three years (or beyond the rookie contract) in the league.
I don't think the rule applies to Lou or maybe anybody else yet because there are plenty of players coming back late.
Lou is entering her 4th year on her rookie contract and the Sparks have just announced they are extending her for a fifth year. That may be a timing issue because LA may want her on contract for next year before she signs a contract for Overseas play so that any contract for Overseas would be subject to the new CBA.
Think what a wonderful summer break this will be for Lou. She'll start the fall on a tremendous D1 team surrounded by oodles of talent and excellent coaching.
