Although UConn published a participation list of 65 players for the Wagner game, 47 actually participated in the game according to the published participation list. (And, we know that there have been errors in the list in the past.) Who didn't participate that was on the list:
OL: Hubbard, Ofari-Nyadu, Torres-Silva (played 7)
TE: Medlock, Richardson (played 2)
RB: Black, O'Reilly (played 2)
WR: Brown, Ross (played 6)
QB: Krajewski, Zergiotis (played 1)
DL: Garson, Migliaccio, Thomas (played 7)
LB: Mitchell (played 8)
DB: Bell, Olaniyan (played 11)
Specialists: Sidebotham (played 5)
Three of the players that didn't participate did not play due to known reasons: Brown, Ross, and Thomas.
Here is the breakdown of those who participated by class:
FR: 2
RFR: 12
SO: 8
RSO: 4
JR: 7
RJR: 11
SR: 1
RSR: 2
GR: 3
Only 2 true freshmen participated, but only 6 SRs or above participated.
For the Illinois game, UConn will have Ross, Brown, and Thomas back. In addition, a player that has not been talked about a lot is Zavier Scott, who also returns this week. Scott rushed for 210 yards on 34 carries (6.2 yard per carry) and caught 33 passes for 228 yards last year. So, it looks like UConn will have back for the Illinois game 3 of the top WRs and one of the DT starters.
Maybe having three of the top WRs out for the game impacted the offensive gameplay more than some think. I would think it would have been hard for a new QB to lose 3 of his top WRs for the first game.
And, Thomas will help on the DL as UConn does not have significant DT depth.
Hopefully, we are surprised by the team's play on Saturday.
