If we don't have Jalen and Alterique we might not break 40:

What dropoff? A pair of relentless guards are behind...

Offensive sets against the Cougars often spark no joy and must be discarded. Only four teams have broken the 70-point barrier against them this season. Houston holds opponents to an effective field goal percentage of 41.8, third-stingiest in the country according to KenPom.com. Opposing teams are making just 26.2 percent from 3-point range; only Virginia has been more effective in defending shots from deep.

Those numbers reflect a team-wide devotion to defensive effort, of course, but Davis and Robinson form the horns of this particular beast. Both are listed at a modest 6-foot-1, and neither has the type of wingspan that would make Jay Bilas gush on draft night. But both are fearless, aggressive, in-your-face ball hawks. According to Synergy Sports, opposing players are scoring just 0.578 points per possession when Robinson is the primary defender, which ranks in the 96th percentile nationally. For Davis, the numbers are .704 points per possession, in the 85th percentile.

Both are outstanding on-ball defenders. Teammates don’t have to worry about helping against penetration, which tightens up rotations and allows big men to protect the rim and crash the glass. In other words, the Cougars’ first line of defense holds the key to everything.

Doesn't bode well for a team without a true ball handler (assuming no AG and Jalen)

I don't have any reason to speculate on the timetable for AG's return. I was simply continuing the "What If" of OP's first line...

I wonder if this is a Houston team that can actually go deep in the tournament. Like Elite 8.
I didn't think they would be better this year having lost Gray. But they nearly beat the eventual runner-up last year, and look possibly better this year.
Granted, they haven't played much of anyone. A few good wins.

We played Houston without Jalen once before. It was ugly.

Hopefully Alterique is back. Might be rough either way.

Yeah i remember going to the Houston game a couple years ago without Jalen and it wasn't pretty. I expect pretty much the same result this time around if AG isn't back and playing at least 80%.

I've wondered this too. They're obviously really good but they don't shoot well from 3 (34.4%, tied for 174th nationally). They sort of remind me of a more athletic Cincinnati.

Houston: 34.4% from 3, 75.5 ppg, 39th O Efficiency, 60.5 Oppnent PPG 5th Nationally, 5th D Efficiency
Cincinnati: 34.9% from 3, 75.0 ppg, 21st O Efficiency, 61.5 Opponent PPG 9th nationally, 12th D Efficiency

Looking ahead to Houston...

Fan base: puke emoji.

whelp I guess its the more attractive of the next 2 beatings we are going to take. Memphis will just be a garden variety road beating. Ive workedshopped that. Verdict: snoozers. Weve seen it before.

Houston will be the St. Valentines Day massacre at home. It has more cachet.

Temple doesn’t shoot well from 3 either until they played us

Forget all stats. Houston is good. Real good. Memphis is coached well also. Not looking good for a positive ending this year. Then again, we could win the AAC tournament.

Alterique could have played against Temple. Hurley is being very careful.

They really should market that at this point. "Houston, we have a problem...it's the St. Valentine's Day Massacre--in Hartford!!!"

Houston is at least a Sweet 16 team. I hope they win out the rest of the season and AAC Tourney. Want to see how far they can get in rankings

I'd buy that T-shirt.

Some date night promotion that's going to be.

A heads up, and an invitation.

For those of you who haven't yet offered a Game Day Haiku, the 3-line Japanese poetry form requires a

First line with 5 "X"
Where "X" equals syllables
Then 7, then 5

"Houston? We have a problem" would make a nifty middle line. You can play with the punctuation to match your emotions. And remember, it's all for the mojo.

ugh how has that mojo been working out the last few years? Maybe we should try a sonnet.
