OK, so I don't want to disrespect Syracuse and USF, but it seems a reasonable assumption that UConn will be able to win those two games with relative ease. Given this, seems worth talking about what's coming after that.
UConn's schedule post-USF is as follows:
1/30- @ #5 Duke
2/4- #8 Rutgers
2/7- @ #15 Louisville
2/11- #17 Georgetown
2/13- @ Oklahoma
2/18- St. John's
That's four ranked teams in a row, plus two other potentially tough games (OU will have a good crowd on hand for UConn and has been playing better of late, SJU is erratic but can be good).
We'll know a lot more about Duke after they play Maryland. They played ND very tough- it took a furious comeback by ND to win. Was that just a bad night by ND, or is Duke measurably better than last season? And will it be enough to test UConn in their gym? A big road win would do wonders for UConn's confidence, even if we know Duke isn't ND or Baylor.
A 6-0 run against this schedule probably sews up a #1 seed and gives UConn a lot of positive momentum heading into the regular season finale with ND and the BET. It also would speak volumes to the maturity of this team. Part of being a legitimate contender is that you don't lose games you shouldn't. If UConn is that far along, everyone, from the kids to the coaching staff, deserves some serious accolades. This was supposed to be a transitional year for the Huskies.
And if they lose a game during this run? Well, it wouldn't be the end of the world, but there would be a lot of work to do.
One reason UConn hasn't lost two games in a row since 1993, however, is that they win games they're supposed to better than anyone. Hopefully we see that carry forward into February.
