Short term, it is terrible that Temple and the American got shafted. More than shafted.
But long term maybe this is exactly what needed to happen so that these awful bottom feeder teams are forced to improve their RPIs. I am not asking Tulane, E. Carolina, UCF, USF, and Houston to go out and win 20 wins game next year. But when your RPIs range from 212-272, you screw everyone else in the conference. SMU becomes a 6 seed, Cincy gets an 8 in Kentucky's bracket, and Temple doesn't get in.
These teams HAVE TO IMPROVE THEIR SCHEDULES. Do what the NBE does. Xavier lost 10 games, but because the RPIs of their conference mates were solid, they got the same d*mn seed as SMU, who lost 6 games all year.
Aresco talked about it, the man in charge of basketball for the American talked about it...this needs to change. SMU didn't get in last year because their OOC was in the 300s. Temple played a good out of league schedule, beat Kansas, but they ended up with a SOS of 60. I think they should have gotten in, but if they played in a decent league, their SOS would have been in the 30s, and their RPI in the 20s. Marquette and DePaul were the two lowest RPI teams in the NBE at 147 and 195. Get out bottom feeder teams to there.
