Here's what he has to say about UConn:
“I just like the way he lets his guards loose. I think that’s why a lot of people are starting to mention them a lot. Because the way they had with Shabazz (Napier) and Kemba (Walker). The way they let those guys loose and just play.”

How does Calipari recruit you?

“We’ve built a relationship, so now it’s just like talking to a regular friend or something. It’s really nothing special when I see his name pop up on the phone. If me and him are talking, it’s never like, ‘Whoa, Cal’s calling me.’ At first it was like that. Now, it’s just like, ‘Cal, what’s up, how you been.’”

I wonder what are Newman's chances for jumping overseas, following Mudiay's footsteps and skipping college altogether.

As I said before, a kid that is so enamored of Cal just gives me shaky vibes.

Want Stone badly but this kid not feeling him nearly as strong despite being top 5 talent. UConn has 4 titles because of hard work, chemistry, team-oriented play/ togetherness. Calipari type kids don't exude those qualities most of the time. But we can go off what we read in quotes so obviously a lot of speculation here.

Is the staff prioritizing him the way they r on Stone? I know he's a big target but Stone seems to be #1 in terms of effort.

I feel Newman is more likely to be swayed by stone than vice versa based on the fact he is much more insistent that they're a package, while stone seems mum on the subject. Hence the greater effort going after stone, and also just the fact that a big is a much greater need than another guard right now

I don't think the staff is prioritizing Stone anymore than Newman. Newman was injured so that's why you didn't see any comments about the staff watching him.

Cal's style (at least since his Memphis days) has never been about "coaching" so much as managing personalities of top level talent. If being a buddy to the players gets them on campus, that's probably 90% of the battle. At that point it's just a matter of getting the chemistry right.

NOTE: I'm an outspoken Cal hater, but the hate has toned down now that we own UK.

I think Ollie will probably push for a commitment before spring. Especially if there is interest in committing from the likes of Derrick Jones and Enoch, he will need a decision if the package deal is to happen at UConn.

Hopefully he visits in August/September and loves it.

The stuff I've been reading about Newman and Stone is kind of interesting. Newman says package deal is 100% and Stone's father is quieter about it. Last I heard, it seemed like Stone was 50/50 about the package deal. Stone said he'll announce his decision in November on ESPN. It'll be interesting to see what happens come Fall.

That makes me uneasy. When's the last time we won a high-stakes, high-profile recruiting battle that ended with someone making a major announcement/news conference on TV?

Whelp, there's always room for a first. Also, times are changing. And we've got a new coach.

I'd prefer if he was doing the Rock move. But it's cool. I like how Stone and his father are handling his recruitment. Understated and classy. Can't fault them for making a high profile announcement at the end of it all.

I expect that by that time, UConn will have landed a couple commitments. Maybe Enoch or Sharma.

Maybe if Cal's players didn't view him as, "Hey Cal, what's up?" he'd be a lot more effective as a coach.
That and his mystery "tweak".

"hey andrew! pass the ball more, will ya?"

I loved 'the tweak'. Once I heard that, I knew we'd roll.

Yeah, that program's been an absolute trainwreck since he got there.

[rolls eyes.]

I hate to break it to you, but most of these kids like Calipari.

I'd rather win the things that we do win (national title games). If this kid picks us, great. Whether it is by quietly sending a signed LOI or by picking up a baseball cap on national television won't make any difference If he doesn't pick us, we'll still be fine.
