Pitt has been able to visit New York, D.C., Philadelphia and New Jersey and entice recruits—most of them not at the top of prep rankings, but nearly all possessing the toughness and team-first character Dixon values—to play in a league they have known all their lives.
Take away the lure of the Big East, and those recruits might view Pitt as a less-appealing destination. The Big East not only provides the opportunity for a Philly kid to return home periodically for a game against Villanova, or to the region to play Seton Hall or Rutgers or even St. John’s, it also provides the thrill of ending the conference season at Madison Square Garden in the Big East Tournament.
Really think there are dozens of kids from Jersey who’ll be excited about playing road games in Winston-Salem, N.C., and Tallahassee, Fla.?

This will harm us as well, though not as much as Pitt. We have a national recruiting footprint and other advantages. But in specific regard to our NYC pipeline, I'm very concerned.

I'm less concerned for one reason. You can get in the car and drive to Hartford for a game, turn around and be back home in Brooklyn before Letterman ends. From Pittsburgh not so much. It pretty much takes a day each way. So if you want Mommy to watch you every home game, where are you going to go?

though I do have two other thoughts about this piece...first, does this guy actually think kids won't want to play against, you know, Duke, UNC...because that's who you're playing when you go to those places. People seem to forget that part of the equation when they talk about Pitt recruiting in the ACC. Second, though, does it seem strange that USC would want to build teams that play great in the regular season then gag up hairballs every year in the Tournament? If they wanted that, they ought to call Boeheim...

A young Jim Boeheim. Can't win in March.

Dixon has taken Pitt as far as he can. And he knows it. Time for a change.
I kinda feel the same way about Jay Wright.

They did interview Hopkins :D

Living in Pgh (which, contrary to posts on TheBigLead, does not hate hoops, only the NBA), there's been a Sean Miller watch on forever. It's not so much that Pgh doesn't like Dixon (although the lack of a FF doesn't help), but Sean Miller is a prodigal son in these parts.

And I think the poster who noted that Dixon would have to recruit ACC floppers instead of physical players had a valid point. Not Dixon's (or OBE's) style.

It would seem crazy to leave AZ for Pitt.

Unfortunately for USC, that would be a major step up.

I believe Pitt has a larger problem which is the ACC refs won't allow Pitt to play their style against the likes of UNC & Duke.

It would be kind interesting to have Howland at UCLA, and his protege at the hated crosstown rivals.
