“I loved coaching her because she had a really good grasp of who she is,” Auriemma said. “She had a tremendous understanding of who she is, what she brings to the team, what her role is going to be. And she’d embrace that role. Every time she came off the bench she was able to give you exactly what you needed. There were never any times that she would come into a game and you said, ‘She doesn’t have it today.’ She always brought a certain level of intensity, a certain level of toughness.

I've always liked Whalen. I hope she becomes a great coach, and I think she has most of the tools to become one. I think one crucial trait that Geno cites in the linked article is that she always knew and was able to do just what the team needed. Recognizing what a team needs is the first step toward becoming a good coach. I think she can communicate that to her team, and if she can recruit, she'll be a great coach.
