Everybody get this in their email about the season maybe starting on November 25th, and that the NCAA is voting on this September 16th, and then the conferences will figure it all out from there, including details on intra-conference play. College basketball, here we come :)

Basketball Season Start Update

A very-unique fall semester is underway at UConn, classes are taking place, some of which are in person and some online. The campus is less populated, as staff who don’t have student-facing duties have been asked to work from home. Our student-athletes are attending classes, and while there will not be any fall competition, they are still training and practicing, albeit with some restrictions and adjustments. We know many of you are probably curious about the basketball season and if we have any further information to report. You may have seen news that the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Oversight Committees recently announced a proposal to start the 2020-21 basketball season on November 25, which is about two weeks later than the normal season opener. This proposal is expected to be voted upon by the NCAA Division I Council on Wednesday, September 16. If ratified, we would also expect guidance on how many total games teams will be able to play in a shortened season. Following the NCAA’s announcement, conferences across the country, including the BIG EAST, will then determine an appropriate structure for the season, including details on intra-conference play. Once the NCAA and BIG EAST conference have announced their plans, we will examine the parameters from these governing bodies and determine what, if any, changes must be made to our home schedules. Additionally, universities across the country will follow guidance from their respective states on social distancing procedures for large, indoor spaces, such as basketball arenas. With the excitement surrounding our return to the BIG EAST, we hope to be able to welcome fans back to our venues, but the safety and well-being of all attendees remains our top priority. We will collaborate with university and state health officials to determine what is feasible. It is still unclear at this time if or how many fans will be permitted to attend games. As you know, the ongoing coronavirus situation has created new circumstances for all of us to navigate. We are extremely appreciative of your continued support as well as your patience and understanding. While many questions still remain, we are hopeful to have more information to share in the coming weeks about what the basketball season may look like and various options that our loyal fans can consider in order to make decisions in your best interest. Stay safe and well. Go Huskies! Sincerely, Dave Benedict
