Layup numbers for UCONN-Villanova BET game

After the Villanova game I was bothered by so many missed layups. My definition of a layup is any shot attempted within the restricted area. After rewatching and collecting layup numbers for the UCONN-Villanova game I was amazed UCONN attempted 33 layups. Especially considering they took a total of 54 shots for the entire game. Sixty-one percent of their shots were layups. I would really like to know what their layup percentage is for all of their games. They shot 55.6% (30-54) for this game. For layups they shot 60.6% in this game. In this game the players made 20 layups and missed 13 layups. Only a few layups were tightly contested. They left a lot of points on the court.

If your numbers are correct, I see 3 makes and 2 misses for Paige.... you have the game total reversed.

One of them was that spin move that would have been on the highlight reels but somehow it didn’t drop in the basket.

The two things I don't think Geno does in practice is whistle the travels when they occur, and have his players repetitively shoot layups until it is a function of muscle memory -- something I'm convinced that Kim Mulkey does do with her bigs.

The one thing he does seem to have addressed though is the free throw shooting. Good on him. And clearly team and individual defense has become a major point of focus since Arkansas. I love that one as a priority, given how young this team is and therefore how much energy they can bring to that task.

There's obviously not enough time to do everything you want to do as a coach, so I really like where Geno's priorities have been going into March. But yeah, is sure is frustrating seeing our players miss all those bunnies.

IMO a layup means an uncontested shot at the rim. If Liv gets a wide open look next to the basket, without a defender between her and the basket IMO that's a layup. Against Marquette, Evina took the ball coast to coast and drove to the basket, was contested and missed the shot right of the rim, IMO that is NOT a layup.
IMO the designation does not depend on how close the shot is, it depends on whether or not the shot is contested or not.
Think of the term "bunny", synonymous with term layup.
They miss layups, especially Liv and AE, but IMO nothing in the % range you're describing.

Geno addressed the issue of missed layups a few years ago in wcbb..he came to the conclusion it was because they'r hands were smaller an they couldn't get a good grip on the ball..idk the ball is smaller too..SC takes missed layups to a whole other level..never mind the 4 they missed against us at the end of the game which would hav won it for them but every game I watch them they hav numerous missed bunnys..Dawn says she has no idea why this is
